USAC's Southwest Sprint Car Series expands to an 18-race slate in 2004, with
additional events currently under negotiation. In addition, participants will
share in contingency bonuses and awards on a per-race as well as year-end basis.
Companies involved in the series contingencies include Valvoline, the
University of Northwestern Ohio, Weld Racing, Simpson, Racing Electronics, The
Indy Racing League's "Fast Qualifier" program and K & N
Performance Filters.
The series kicks off March 20 at Imperial Valley Speedway in El Centro,
Calif. and winds its way through six states, concluding November 21 at the
United Sports Arizona USA oval in Tucson, Arizona. In between, the series visits
four new venues and returns to
our 50th state for the second annual "Hawaii Sprint Car Classic" near
Honolulu November 12-13.
New to the 2004 calendar are Reno-Fernley Raceway in Fernley, Nev. (May 29),
Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Nevada (May 30), Lone Star Speedway in Kilgore,
Texas (June 12), and Dodge City Raceway Park in Kansas (September 24-25).
Other facilities on the 2004 slate include a return to Lubbock Motor Speedway in
Texas and Hollywood Hills Speedway in New Mexico. The 3/8-mile dirt oval at
Tucson (United Sports Arizona USA) will host races May 1, July 4, September 5,
October 21-23 and November 21.
Five of the races have been designated "Super Shows," namely the
races at Fernley, NV (May 29), Kilgore, Tex. (June 12), Hollywood Hills (October
2), Tucson (October 23) and Hawaii Motor Speedway (November 13).
"This is our most ambitious schedule yet," says series coordinator
Hal Burns. "It's also nice to have the incentives from so many contingency
companies for our participants. I expect the championship to be hotly-contested
from start to finish and we are looking forward to going back to Hawaii in
November."
