Santa Maria, CA - August 8, 2004...Danny Sheridan, of Santa Maria, saw
nothing but dollar signs when Century 21 Hometown Realty more than doubled the
winner's share of the J.B. Dewar/Bandit Sprint Car purse for Saturday's running
of the 19th Annual Classic Rock 99.1 "The Fox" Bud Stanfield Memorial.
Eddie Stanfield, Bud's son, recently joined the Hometown Realty family and was
instrumental in upping the pot for the race which was
established in his father's memory after the elder Stanfield was hit by a sprint
car in 1984 and succumbed to his injuries.
Starting with a record setting run of 13.424 seconds in qualifying, which
netted another $200.00 put up by Century 21, Sheridan went on to win an 8 lap
heat race and the 30 lap main event. After picking up the lead from Hanford's
Richard Harvey, Jr. on lap six, Sheridan drove away from the rest of the field
despite the efforts of Jimmy Thompson, of Grover Beach, to keep him in sight.
Thompson finished second with Oakley's Scott Holloway third. Fourth and fifth
were taken by Gary Rayburn, Jr., of Grover Beach, and Davey Pombo, of Kerman,
and Harvey placed sixth. Steve DeMott, of Santa Maria, captured the 12 lap
"B" main and Holloway, Pombo and Harvey scored heat race victories.
BCRA Midgets and Midget Lights were also on the schedule. Jimmy Christian, of
Morgan Hill, won his second straight 30 lap feature event at SMS followed by
Thomas Meseraull, of San Jose, and Brian Gard of Kelseyville. Fremont's Rob
Russell and Marysville's Shane Matthews were fourth and fifth. Christian and
Tyler Brown, of Norco, took the 8 lap heat
races. Visiting USAC driver Danny Stratton, of Fontana, broke the 1 lap record
for non-winged midgets, set back in 1995 by J.R. Lawson. That turned out to be
the highlight of his night after blowing his engine in heat race action.
Chad Compton, of Elk Grove, led Roseville's Tyler Franklin and Saint Helena's
Jeff Griffin to the checkers in the 20 lap Midget Lites feature event. Elk
Grove's Doug Hunting and Citrus Heights' Scott Kinney were fourth and fifth.
Franklin and David Maples, of Sebastopol, won 8 lap heat races.
Next Saturday night Century 21 Hometown Realty Late Model Stocks, Diamond
Jewelry & Loan Street Stocks, Christianson Chevrolet Mini Stocks and Campus
Motorsports Factory Stocks will be on the 1/3-mile clay oval. Gates open at
four, qualifying begins at six and racing at seven. Admission prices will be:
$13.00 for adults, $11.00 for seniors (65+) and $3.00 for children 6 to 12.
Santa Maria Speedway is located 1/4-mile north of the 101/166 interchange on
Hutton Road. They're on the internet at santamariaspeedway.com.
