Santa Maria, CA - July 10, 2004...Budweiser/Recyclable Oil Golden
State Challenge winged 410 sprint cars had top billing Saturday night at Santa
Maria Speedway, but it was the J.B. Dewar/Bandit non-winged 360 sprint cars that
stole the spot light.
The 30 lap Bandit main event started well enough but the first of two
extended red flag periods occurred on lap 14 when Jason May, of Taft, flipped
end-over-end down the back chute, coming to rest hanging up-side-down in the
turn three catch fence. The next red, four laps later, was the bad one.
Kingsburg's A.J. Burgin was battling Sidney, Australia's Peter Murphy for the
lead when he tried an outside move on a back marker and
went into the turn three wall. The car flipped violently and came down hard on
the rear wheels. That hit sent Burgin to the hospital, complaining of pain in
his upper back.
When the race resumed it was Davey Pombo, of Kerman, in second place as he
tried to chase down Murphy. Murphy held on for the victory with Pombo second and
Jimmy Thompson, of Grover Beach, third. Oakley's Scott Holloway was fourth,
followed by Hanford's Richard Harvey, Jr. The crash cost Burgin the lead in the
Bandit Series points and dropped him from second to third in J.B. Dewar points.
Pombo now leads both. Pombo also set a new 1 lap record of 13.550 seconds while
8 lap heat race victories went to Burgin, May, and Danny Olmstead of Tracy.
The GSC sprints also ran a 30 lap feature event, but without the drama of the
Bandits. There was a short delay when Mike Faria, of Tipton, crashed on the
opening lap, sidelining his mount and causing a restart. Andy Forsberg, of
Auburn, took the lead when the green flag waived the second time and held that
position throughout. Campbell's Brent Kaeding put the pressure on from second,
but that was as close as he could get. Tommy Tarlton, of Fresno, was third, with
San Jose's Jason Statler and Visalia's Blake Robertson filling in the top-five.
Kaeding also lowered the 1 lap record, setting the mark at 11.272 seconds. Ten
lap heat race victories went to Gilroy's Jon Maiwald, Fresno's Monty Feirriera
and Tulare's Brian Coelho.
Next Saturday night Century 21 Hometown Realty late model stocks, Diamond
Jewelry & Loan street stocks and Christianson Chevrolet mini stocks bring
stock car racing back to the 1/3-mile oval. It will also be the night for the
Ira's Bike Shop of Arroyo Grande Bicycle Races for kids. Admission prices will
be: $13.00 for adults, $11.00 for seniors (65+) and $3.00 for children 6 to 12.
The Speedway is located 1/4-mile north of the 101/166
interchange on Hutton Road. Their web address is santamariaspeedway.com.
