Santa Maria, CA - May 1, 2004...J.B. Dewar/Bandit Sprint Cars, NMRA TQ
Midgets and Christianson Chevrolet Mini Stocks all saw action Saturday night at
Santa Maria Speedway.
Richard Harvey, Jr., of Hanford, set fast time for the Bandits with a lap of
14.064 seconds. A.J. Burgin, of Kingsburg, took full advantage of point leader
Danny Sheridan's absence by winning the 30-lap main event to take over the point
lead. Danny Olmstead, of Taft, was second followed by Davey Pombo of Kerman.
Fourth went to Fresno's Davey Knott and fifth to Santa Maria's Steve DeMott.
Four time defending J.B. Dewar Sprint Car
champion Jimmy Thompson's crash during the feature dropped him from the top spot
in the points. The Grover Beach driver's misfortune elevated Burgin to first
place and dropped Thompson to third, behind Pombo. Eight lap heat races were won
by Richard Havey, Jr., of Hanford, Jimmy Reeves, of Laton, Scott Holloway, of
Carmichael, and Joey Layman of Atascadero.
Ventura's Troy Barkley set fast time of 14.986 second in the NMRA TQ Midget
division but fell out of the 25 lap main event, opening the way for Chuck West,
of Clovis, to take the victory. Steve Lambert, of Lake Elsinore, was second
followed by Todd Hunsaker, of Chino Hills, Steve Parke, of Phillips Ranch, and
Kenny Wiley, of Sunland, who landed on his head earlier in the run but was able
to re-start. Barkley and Hunsaker captured 8-lap
heats.
Lompoc's Mike Weigel found himself the surprise winner of the 20 lap Mini
Stock main event after Jeremy Heroux, of Nipomo, and Brian Nunes, of Santa
Maria, failed a post-race inspection. Ben Caswell, of Santa Barbara, was awarded
second, followed by Atascadero drivers Darrin Davis and Tom Grzincic and Frank
Nyback of Santa Maria. Caswell, Santa Maria's Chris Claborn and Grzincic won
8-lap heat races before Claborn suffered a horrendous crash on the front chute
that sent him to the hospital for a
check-up.
Next Saturday night J.B. Dewar/Bandit Sprint Cars return for the second
straight week, joined by CDCRA Dwarf Cars and Diamond Jewelry & Loan Street
Stocks. Gates open at four with qualifying at six and racing at seven. Admission
will be: adults - $16.00, seniors (65+) - $14.00, children 6 to 12 - $3.00. The
third-mile oval is 1/4-mile north of the 101/166 interchange on Hutton Road.
