IT WAS COTTLE ON THE THROTTLE AT I-69 SPEEDWAY
by Norm Bogan

GAS CITY, IN, AUGUST 13, 2004 - After a drizzly afternoon, action got underway at I-69 Speedway with forty-eight sprint cars on hand for Race #11 of the SCRA season and the fourth event on the NWWC Tour.  Shane Cottle took the early lead and maintained his position through several early altercations.  There was an eight lap sparring match with Shane Hollingsworth, who nosed in front for one lap, but Cottle was able hold off the charge and after a late race yellow on Lap 28, Tony Elliott got around Hollingsworth and challenged Cottle, but was unable to best his Kokomo neighbor.

Early arriving SCRA travelers found this facility and a good track surface for the races as a positive.  Members of one team were given a Golf Cart tour of the facilities and the racers were impressed with the track and the overall speed plant.  The track workers functioned in concert with the SCRA staff, making it a pleasant experience for both the officials and racers.  A number of the track personnel came to the pits and visited after the event, noting how much they enjoyed the professional level maintained by the SCRA staff.  A near
capacity crowd and good car count has them in line for a show again next year. It was an impressive show considering that this was the opening night for high school football in the Hoosier state.

A great individual effort was noted as Matt Hardin could not qualify in the top thirty-two, so was required to tag the rear of the Second "B" Main, starting in the fifth row.  He worked his way up to the transferring to the "A" Feature.  Hardin moved from twenty-second starting position to finish thirteenth in the "A" Main.

Matt Brun of New Carlisle, Ohio, drove his Eagle/Gaerte racer to a new track record in qualifying, turning a 12.417 time trial.  Semi regular SCRA competitor, Casey Shuman timed to a second fast lap, driving the Paul Hazen #57 sprinter.  Another track record was noted, when twenty-eight cars clocked in under 13 seconds.

During the post race interview, Cottle related that his team had enjoyed several successful outings at I-69, including a double feature win, when he won both the sprint and modified main events.  During a post race interview, Cottle stated that a dedicated team surrounds him, but they prefer to race near home.  Late in the year, he would like to journey west for one of the late season, big money events, so if someone is interested in providing a ride for a journeyman driver, with good credentials, you could have Cottle on the throttle.

It was noted that Dave Darland skipped a USAC sprint race in Lake Erie, Pennsylvania to race near home.  Tony Elliott was back at the keyboard of the Jeff Walker #11, which Sammy Swindell took to victory on Wednesday night at Knoxville, Iowa.  Alex Pruett has spent the summer in Indiana, so it was a surprise to see the youngster doing well and gaining valuable experience.

Following this outing, the tour turns around and heads toward home, with stops in Tulsa and Kansas City.  Many of the SCRA traveling group felt this had been the best track of the tour so far.  They liked the facility and the racing surface and especially the cordial staff of the track.

The next event on the NAPA Auto Parts/Auto Trader Magazine NWWC Tour will be
on Wednesday August 18, 2004 at Tulsa Speedway.
