KNOXVILLE, IA, AUGUST 11, 2004 - Sammy Swindell exhibited
his prowess with a
traditional sprint car in front of a large audience on opening night
of the Knoxville Nationals. Swindell started from the pole and
led all fourteen laps of the Rick Zimmerman Memorial Race.
This special event took the top ten finishers from the previous
night's program of the SCRA/Non Wing World Championship race at
nearby Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa. Additionally, four
cars were added to the rear of the field as Promoter's options,
including, the Oskaloosa Hard Charger.
The field comprised top sprint car pilots from around the country.
J.J. Yeley and Damion Gardner both moved through the field in
impressive fashion, advancing six and five positions respectively.
Swindell, aboard the Jeff Walker, Hoosier Tire/Weld Wheel, Claxton
powered F5 chassis, dominated the race, as Matt Westfall diced with
Levi Jones for second, throughout the event.
The large crowd seemed to approve of this race, as the teams took to
the track for a hot lap session on the first night of the Knoxville
Nationals as J.J.Yeley pulled wheelies along the straight-aways.
Others practiced a "slide job" or two. After the
completion of the Nationals "A" Main, few fans left their
seats as the non-wing cars took to the track for the "Zimmerman
Memorial Race". As the event was completed, fans poured
from the stands to check out these cars, take pictures and collect
autographs.
