OSKALOOSA, IA, AUGUST 10, 2004 - Second generation racer,
Dickie Gaines
hailing from Mitchell, Indiana, added to his runner-up Mopar Million
purse of $100,000 with a new deposit of the $30,000 winner's share
at Southern Iowa Speedway's Ultimate Challenge race. While
visitors expected warm and humid weather, normally experienced this
time of year, they were clad in sweatshirts and jackets to fend off
the cool night more typical of late autumn. Gaines only led
the final lap of thirty with an advantage of not more than two feet
over Jesse Hockett.
The fans loved the spectacular finish of the feature and also a
moving pre-race tribute to Keith Hutton, who lost his life in this
race, one year ago. Fifty-one cars collected times during
qualifying. Forty cars would be scheduled into the four heats,
with balance tagging the rear of two "B" Main Events.
Twenty-two cars queued up for the "A" Main with Jesse
Hockett and Levi Jones heading the pack. Hockett assumed the
early lead, holding the point for sixteen laps, before being
overtaken by Zach Chappell. Zach moved out to the point with
Gaines and Hockett trailing close behind. A red flag for a
Charles Davis flip put the field back to none to tail on the next to
last lap. Hockett and Gaines quickly jumped past Chappell on
the restart, which lead to a drag race off turn four, with Dickie
winning by a margin of about two feet.
As a bonus for tonight's performances, the top ten finishers will
run in a fully inverted "Rick Zimmerman Invitational" race
at nearby Knoxville Raceway on Wednesday evening, opening night of
the Knoxville Nationals. In addition to the top-ten contingent
of Sammy Swindell, Matt Westfall, Cory Kruseman, Jac Haudenschild,
Levi Jones, Dave Darland, Jon Stanbrough, Zach Chappell, Jesse
Hockett and Dickie Gaines, four others have been added as Promoter's
options. Damion Gardner by virtue of his Hard Charger Award,
advancing from twenty-second to eleventh, will join the rear of the
field followed by Rickie Gaunt, J.J. Yeley and Charles Davis Jr.
We still have four exciting nights of racing left on this year's
tour before heading home to complete the SCRA season. The NWWC
tourists will be venturing further east for a Friday night race at
I-69 Speedway in Gas City, Indiana. The homeward swing will
then take place as the racers return to Tulsa on Wednesday August
18th and then settle in for three nights at Lakeside Speedway in
Kansas City, before heading on home. A number of the contestants
from the Midwest plan to enter the races at Tulsa and Lakeside.
