SAN FELIPE, NM, AUGUST 7, 2004 - On a clear, less
threatening evening, with
the track not as greasy as Friday, Rickie Gaunt stormed to his sixth
NAPA Auto Parts / Auto Trader Magazines win of the season. In
time trials, Gaunt's teammate, Charles Davis Jr., captured Arizona
Race Mart fast time honors, wheeling the Smiley Extreme
Chassis//David Zoriki #8A to a Saturday clocking of 16.711.
Six new entries were on hand with the loss of two cars from last
night to make this evening's field total of 44 cars.
The top four finishers from the Friday's "A" Main gained
automatic entries into Saturday's 30-lap feature. Mike Kirby,
Steve Ostling, Rick Ziehl and Gaunt were staged at the front of the
Saturday night JE Pistons Dash to determine their starting positions
in the finale. Joining the transfers from last night in
tonight's Dash were Davis, Mike Spencer, Alan Ballard and Robert
Hall, with the finish determining the grid for the first four rows.
The balance of the racers worked their way through the heats and
Semi to gain an entry into the "A" Main. Twenty-four
racers ascended to the feature to vie for top honors.
The opening lap of the feature found a third of the field piled up
in turn four. After the melee, only Bobby Seals was unable to
restart. Gaunt maintained the lead closely pursued by Kirby,
Ostling and Ziehl as they approached and threaded their way through
traffic.
By the midway point, there was enough rubber laid down, that a
number of the racers were pulling wheelies coming off the corners.
Ziehl was hooked up so well that he was driving off the right
rear tire. Davis was running a harder tire, which took longer to
adapt to the track surface, but as it did, Davis was charging toward
the front. Ostling had a tire going flat and dropped from a
steady fourth to finish a distant twelfth. Meanwhile, Davis
won an ongoing duel with Ziehl and moved into third. At the
checkers, Smiley teammates Gaunt and Davis book-ended Kirby for the
podium positions. Ziehl came home fourth,
followed by a strong running Hall out of Show Low, Arizona.
Charlie Fegan was aboard the top finishing 360, coming home ninth.
SCRA/NWWC regular, Ballard was involved in the first lap crash,
suffering a broken front end. Quick repairs got him back on
the track returning to gain a tenth place finish.
As the race entered the final laps, the front-runners appeared to
get faster. Gaunt's last lap was turned at 15.948.
At the post race interview, Gaunt was pleased to have set his
nemesis, Kirby back to second while claiming his sixth victory of
the season. He stated that he way happy to have won and be on
the podium with his good friend and teammate. When Gaunt and
Kirby were informed that a few more laps might have let Davis garner
his first victory of the season as he was closing fast behind the
front twosome. Gaunt, as always was gracious in Victory Circle
as he thanked the fans for supporting the races at Hollywood Hills
Speedway.
The traveling band now moves on to Oskaloosa, Iowa for race #3 on
Tuesday, August 10th. A large field is expected to challenge
for the $30,000 first place purse.
