KIRBY PACES THE OPENING NIGHT OF THE NWWC TOUR AT
HOLLYWOOD HILLS |
| SAN FELIPE, NM, AUGUST 6, 2004 - Staging in the pits for
Friday night's opening round of the Non-Wing World Championship (NWWC) tour at Hollywood Hills Speedway found the NAPA Auto Part / Auto Trader Magazines SCRA traveling contingent, plus many entries from the local NMMRA racers and some visitors from Texas, Arizona Kansas and Nevada for a total of forty cars. Local racer, Charlie Fegan exhibited some of his drag boat expertise to claim fast time over the traveling band. Mike Kirby aboard the Carol Crossno/Snap-On Tools, Downing powered, TCR broke Rickie Gaunt's strangled hold on SCRA victories. "Super Rickie" assumed the early lead after a couple of false starts, but lost the point to Kirby on lap eight. Eventually, Steve Ostling and Rick Ziehl got by Gaunt, followed by teammate, Charles Davis Jr. completing the top five. In the post race interview, Kirby was excited about his first SCRA/NWWC victory of the year and said he liked the track. He plans to run again tomorrow night at the San Felipe, NM venue and then continue on the tour to Oskaloosa, Iowa for the Tuesday night Ultimate Challenge with its $30,000 to win purse and a possible invitation to the Wednesday night Rick Zimmerman race at the nearby famed Knoxville Raceway. Kirby stated that Gaunt ran him clean and as his car came to the track, he was able to pass for the lead. It was fun for these two good friends to compete against each other.
