GAUNT TRIES FOR FIVE AT BARONA
by Robert Mayson

LAKEWOOD, CA., June 20 -- Rickie Gaunt
(Torrance) will be looking for a record fifth straight NAPA Auto
Parts / Auto Trader Magazines Sprint Car Racing Association (SCRA)
main event win this Saturday night, June 26th, at the Barona
Speedway Park (Ramona).
Gaunt dominated the first ever SCRA race at Barona on May 1st and
survived a last lap challenge from Seth Wilson (San Clemente) during
the May 29th event to remain as the only driver to win a SCRA main
event at Barona. During his record setting streak, Gaunt has
also posted a pair of victories (April 24th & May 15th) at the
Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare.
Gaunt's Tony Smiley Motorsports teammate, Charles Davis, Jr.
(Buckeye, AZ), has finished second to Gaunt three times this season,
but has yet to claim an SCRA win of his own. Davis was,
however, extremely exciting in the last Barona event, driving from
the 22nd starting spot to finish second.
Nineteen year-old Alan Ballard (Bakersfield) finished fourth in the
last race behind Kevin Urton (Elk Grove) and remains third in series
points (with 300) behind Gaunt (440) and Davis (397). Wilson
sits fourth in SCRA points (253) ahead of veteran driver Verne
Sweeney (242) of Lomita.
Damion Gardner (Concord) is expected to be on hand Saturday driving
for eight-time SCRA Owners Champion Ron Chaffin (Madera).
Harlan Willis (Ojai) is the only car owner other than Chaffin to win
the SCRA owners title in the last nine years. Steve Ostling of
Corona is slated to drive for Willis Saturday at Barona.
To date, there have been five SCRA races this season and Cory
Kruseman (Ventura) is the only driver other than Gaunt to visit
victor lane. Gaunt, who finished third in the season opener to
Kruseman, is the only driver to have finished in the top-five in
every race this season. Davis' sixth place finish in the
opener was the only time this season he has failed to finish in the
top-five.
