LAKEWOOD, CA., APRIL 27 -- The NAPA Auto Parts / Auto Trader
Magazines
Sprint Car Racing Association (SCRA) tour hopes for better weather this Saturday
night, May 1st, when the series returns to Barona Speedway Park (Ramona).
Rain forced the cancellation of the SCRA's first ever Barona appearance two
weeks ago. However, there was not a cloud in the sky when Rickie Gaunt
(Torrance) stormed his way to victory last Saturday (April 24th) at the
Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare. It was an impressive night for Gaunt, who
started the program by being the fastest qualifier before gathering his tenth
career SCRA main event win.
The victory was also the first for car owner Tony Smiley (Buckeye, AZ). Smiley's
other car, driven by Arizona sprint car champion Charles Davis, Jr.
(Buckeye, AZ), finished second. Davis, who set fast and finished sixth in
the April 1st race at Tulare, sits second in series points behind his teammate
Gaunt (164 to 146).
Steve Ostling, Corona, made his debut in the Harlan Willis sprinter last week
and finished fourth behind Australian driver Peter Murphy. Seventeen year
old Alan Ballard (Bakersfield) finished sixth and is now third in the season
point standings (96).
