RUSTY ESPINOZA TROPHY DASH ADDED TO JACK KINDOLL CLASSIC!

(NOVEMBER 14, 2004, PERRIS, CA) Perris Auto Speedway and Don Weaver are pleased to announce that a trophy dash honoring longtime CRA official Rusty Espinoza has been added to Saturday’s 8th Annual Jack Kindoll Classic presented by Temecula Valley Pipe & Supply and Vista Paint at the PAS.

The special three-lap dash will be open to the four fastest qualifiers in the Valvoline USAC/CRA field. The race will be inverted and will pay $200.00 to win, $150.00 for second, $100.00 for third and $50.00 for fourth. Clark Drake Incorporated and Doug’s Auto Body are sponsors of the race.

The trophy dash will honor Espinoza who had a long association with the original CRA. A native of Anaheim, California, Espinoza had a brief career as a driver and owner of a roadster with CRA in 1951. In 1952, he became a CRA photographer. Espinoza kept snapping photos until 1954 when he was appointed “Head Yellow Flagman” with the club. Standing on the edge of the track and praying that the drivers saw him didn’t meet with Espinoza’s expectations and in 1955 he took over the job as CRA Referee. In Buzz Rose’s book “California Hot Shoes,” Espinoza explained what it was like to be the referee, “I hadn’t had that many people yell at me since I was in the Navy!”

After one year on the job as referee, Espinoza ran for secretary of CRA in 1956 and won the election. He held that job for an incredible 37 years!

Part of the secretary’s job was registrar at the pit gate at all CRA races. That brought Espinoza in contact with hundreds of drivers, car owners, crew members, officials, media members and fans through the years. His friendly demeanor became a fixture at the races and is still cherished today in 2004 the year CRA has been reborn.

Spectator gates will open at 5:00 PM.

Perris Auto Speedway is conveniently located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds, home of the Southern California Fair, approximately one hour east of Los Angeles. Take the 215 Freeway, exit at the Ramona Expressway and go east two and a half miles to the fairgrounds.
