(OCTOBER 19, 2004, PERRIS, CA) With the quality of the entries rolling in
for the 9th Annual Budweiser Oval Nationals presented by Temecula Valley Pipe
& Supply at Perris Auto Speedway on October 28th, 29th and 30th, the race
may end up being the most talent laden in the tracks history.
Heading the list of recent entries is Concord, California’s Damion Gardner.
The 30-year old currently sits second in the Valvoline USAC/CRA Sprint Car
Series and has won five main events at the Riverside County Clay oval this year
including the last two in a row. In what could be an ominous sign for the
competition, Gardner has won both of the 50-lap mains staged at The PAS this
year and the finals of the Oval Nationals is 50-laps.
Corona, California’s Tony Jones, who won the 2000 Oval Nationals and who
finished second in 2001, got his entry in this week as well. Currently sitting
sixth in the Valvoline USAC/CRA standings, Jones is still looking for his first
win of the campaign. Rumors swirl that the Johnny Vermeer crew will have a new
engine in the car for the month ending three-day race.
Levi Jones, from Olney, Illinois, a former PAS regular when he drove for Glenn
Crossno, will be making his second PAS appearance of 2004 in the 2B Racing
entry. Jones, 22, who is no relation to Tony Jones, is ranked fourth in USAC
National Sprint Car points and earlier this season won the coveted Valvoline
Indiana Sprint Week Championship. In addition, the former high school basketball
star won the first USAC National Sprint Car main of his career at The Dirt Track
at Charlotte Motor Speedway on October 13th.
Twenty-one year old Jesse Hockett of Warsaw, Missouri will be making his Oval
Nationals debut behind the wheel of the Jim Massey #2 at the Nationals. Well
known throughout the Midwest, the youngster has won races in winged sprint cars
and traditional sprint cars as well. Hockett competes in several different
series including the World of Outlaws.
Personable Charles Davis, Jr., of Buckeye, Arizona is among the group of new
entries. The 1993 CRA Rookie of the Year, Davis won the Arizona Sprint Car
Association championship in 1996 and 1999. The 37-year old star finished fourth
in the 30-lap main at the final tune up for the Oval Nationals on October 9th.
Yorba Linda, California veteran Cary Faas will be making his first wingless
appearance of 2004 in his own familiar #37. Faas is the only driver in history
to win the prestigious Hulman Classic three times (1992, 1994 and 1998).
The Southern California brother duo of Brian and Steve Venard has also entered
the high-status race. Brian, the younger of the two, has been ranked in the top
10 in Valvoline USAC/CRA points all season long. Elk Grove, California’s Kevin
Urton recently entered as well. Urton, who drives a UPS truck during the week,
was third fast qualifier the last time the USAC/CRA Series was at The PAS on
October 9th.
In addition to the latest entries, two drivers have been named to fill seats of
already entered cars. Arizona superstar Jeremy Sherman, who dazzled the crowd
after starting near the back and finishing second in last year’s Oval
Nationals, will drive the #11 car owned by Anne Wilkerson. Versatile Indiana
driver Bill Rose will steer Nadine Keller’s #5 in the hunt for the $30,000.00
first place prize.
The Budweiser Oval Nationals is a little over a week away. It features one of
the richest purses in sprint car racing with over $100,000.00 up for grabs. The
winner of the 50-lap finale on October 30th will take home $30,000.00.
