(AUGUST 24, 2004, PERRIS, CA) Hot off one of the best main events in
front of one of the largest regular season crowds in track history, the
Valvoline USAC/CRA Sprint Cars will return to Perris Auto Speedway this Saturday
night for the Temecula Valley Pipe & Supply Showdown II presented by
Temecula Valley Pipe & Supply and Vista Paint.
Last Saturday, Chico, California’s Jason York led every lap to win his first
ever non-winged main event before the huge gathering. York, the son of former
Ascot Sprint Car driver Pat York, held off hard charging Cory Kruseman by less
than a car length for the victory. In doing so, the 2000 Silver Dollar Speedway
Champion became the seventh different winner in the Valvoline USAC/CRA Series.
Joined in victory circle by his wife Julie and 7-week old son Drake, he told the
appreciative throng that it was, “my best night ever.”
Great news for Southern California fans is the fact that York will be back to
try and make it two in a row at The PAS this Saturday. His 33rd birthday also
happens to be Saturday and the veteran could give himself a great birthday
present with another win. While a victory would be a fabulous way to celebrate
his birthday, York cannot expect any gift giving from PAS regulars such as Rip
Williams, Damion Gardner, Mike Kirby, Troy Rutherford and Tony Jones.
Heading into last Saturday, Gardner, who comes from Concord, had closed to
within 11-points of series point leader Williams. Early in the main, Gardner was
battling for fifth with Costa Mesa’s Bobby Cody when they tangled on the front
straight. Gardner did everything but flip and was then tagged by another car. He
was done for the night. He maintained his lofty second place spot in the
standings, but now trails Williams by 48-points heading into this Saturday’s
race. The 48 year-old Williams, who lives in Yorba Linda, ended up third last
Saturday.
In addition to the Perris regulars, Arizona stars Jeremy Sherman and Eric
Wilkins will be in competition at The PAS this Saturday. Sherman, who is coming
off four wins in a row at Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix, Arizona, will be
driving Buzz Shoemaker’s potent #0. Wilkins, who finished second to Sherman
last Saturday, will be driving for Arizona’s Tim Wooldridge.
Joining the Valvoline USAC/CRA Sprint Cars on Saturday’s program will be a
full field of USAC Ford Focus Midgets including series point leader and second
generation driver Chris Rahe and ex-CRA Sprint Car driver Bobby Michnowicz.
In addition to the greats of today competing on the track, this Saturday’s
crowd will feature some of the greatest drivers, car owners and officials in
Southern California history as the 2nd Annual Legends of Ascot will take place
earlier in the day. Honorees for 2004 are drivers Billy Wilkerson, Dean
Thompson, Sleepy Tripp and Johnny Moorehouse. Officials Rusty Espinoza and Ed
Hudson, car owner & mechanic Bruce Bromme Sr. and Bruce Bromme Jr. and
engine builder Ron Shaver.
Spectator gates will open at 5:00 PM on Saturday and racing will begin at 7:00.
Perris Auto Speedway is conveniently located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds,
home of the Southern California Fair, approximately one hour east of Los
Angeles. Take the 215 Freeway, exit at the Ramona Expressway and go east two and
a half miles to the fairgrounds.
