(JUNE 30, 2004, PERRIS, CA)
Saturday’s Budweiser Firecracker 50, presented by Temecula Valley Pipe &
Supply and Vista Paint at Perris Auto Speedway, just got a lot tougher with the
news that Rickie Gaunt, Charles Davis, Jr. and Jeremy Sherman will be entering
the event.
For Gaunt, who resides in Torrance, California, and Smiley Crane teammate Davis,
who calls Buckeye, Arizona home, it will only be their second 2004 appearance at
the brightly lit half-mile oval. In their initial outing on April 12th, they
dazzled the crowd when Gaunt qualified second fast and Davis timed in fifth
quick. Davis, 36, backed up his impressive qualifying effort with a win in the
first heat while Gaunt, 35, took fourth in his heat. In the main event, they
racked up a pair of top ten finishes as Gaunt took seventh and Davis was one
spot behind in eighth.
Sherman, 27, has been a regular at The PAS this year driving for Temple City’s
Anne Wilkerson or Buzz Shoemaker of Glendora. Up until noon Tuesday it appeared
that he would not be at The PAS on Saturday until Wilkerson entered the Phoenix
driver in her National Cold Storage/Shaver Specialties #11. Sherman’s best
2004 outing at The PAS came on April 24th when he steered Shoemaker’s
florescent #0 to a third place finish in the main.
Along with Gaunt, Davis and Sherman, Perris fans will see a full-field including
stars Troy Rutherford (Ojai, CA), Damion Gardner (Concord, CA), Steve Ostling
(Corona, CA), Rip Williams (Yorba Linda, CA), Tony Jones (Corona, CA), Mike
Kirby (Torrance, CA), Adam Mitchell (Escondido), Brian Venard (Irvine, CA), Greg
Bragg (Visalia, CA) and Jordan Hermansador (Long Beach, CA) on Saturday night.
Saturday’s race will be fans last chance to see the popular Valvoline USAC/CRA
Series at Southern California’s Home to Major League Sprint Car Racing until
August 21st.
Spectator gates will open one hour earlier than normal at 4:00 PM on Saturday
and the first race will be at 7:00. For early arriving fans, there will be games
and contests with the kids that will involve the USAC/CRA drivers.
Perris Auto Speedway is conveniently located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds,
home of the Southern California Fair, approximately one hour east of Los
Angeles. Take the 215 Freeway, exit at the Ramona Expressway and go east two and
a half miles to the fairgrounds.
