(MAY
9, 2004, PERRIS, CA) After a week
off, Southern California sprint car fans can get another dose of sideways action
when Corona’s Steve Ostling leads the VRA Sprint Cars in the Executive
Plumbing Shootout at Perris Auto Speedway this Saturday night.
Sharing the bill with the VRA cars will be the California Lightning
Sprint Cars, Ramona Tire Street Stocks and the Pick-A-Part Cruisers.
Ostling,
who resides in Corona, will be back behind the wheel of Buzz Shoemaker’s
Florescent #0 on Saturday. The last
time the 41-year old driver strapped into Shoemaker’s potent ride, he won the
VRA (Ventura Racing Association) main event at The PAS on March 20th.
Ostling
normally pilots the #29 Fischer Motorsports entry in the Valvoline USAC/CRA
Sprint Car Series. In addition to
the Fischer and Shoemaker seats, he has also driven Harlan Willis’ famous #45
car on two occasions this season. His
latest effort in the Willis machine came last Saturday night at Manzanita
Speedway in Phoenix where he was second fast qualifier and finished third in the
Valvoline USAC/CRA main event.
Like
Ostling sitting in three different cars this year, Shoemaker’s racecar has had
four different, top-notch drivers in 2004.
In USAC/CRA action, Indiana’s Jon Stanbrough, Mike English of Norwalk
and Arizona’s Jeremy Sherman have all had seat time in the Glendora based car.
Ostling is the only one to drive it with VRA this year.
In
order to repeat his victory from March, Ostling will have to defeat a stellar
field of VRA regulars including defending series champion and current points
leader Tom Stansberry, 27, of Bakersfield.
The third generation driver has one win and six top five finishes in the
first nine VRA races. Simi
Valley’s Chris Wakim, 41, who won his second VRA main of the year at Ventura
last Saturday and won the first VRA main ever staged at The PAS in 2002, will be
on hand along with Tarzana’s Kevin Kierce and Will “The Thrill” Perkins of
Ventura.
Recent
PAS winners Ernie Bartley III, of El Cajon, and Karl Von Yokes will tangle with
Riverside’s David Cardey in the California Lightning Sprint Cars.
Bartley, who won his first ever PAS main earlier in the year, won the
series last race at Barona on May 1st and currently leads the CLS
standings. Redondo Beach’s Brad
Russell is 32 points behind in second. Cardey,
the defending CLS champion, has a week off from the Valvoline USAC/CRA Series
where he is running for Rookie of the Year.
Buena
Park’s Carl Rozatti leads Ontario’s Chuck Ribbe by one point in the Ramona
Tire Street Stock Series. The
remainder of the top five – Jeff Seesholtz of Pico Rivera, Dale Smith of Hemet
and Don Zoll of Moreno Valley – are all within eight points of the leader.
The
popular Pick-A-Part Cruisers, with two drivers in each car, will close
Saturday’s show. The person in
the passenger seat controls the steering wheel and the brakes while the person
in the passenger seat controls the gas pedal.
Spectator
gates will open at 5:00 PM on Saturday.
