USAC/CRA SPRINT CAR & WESTERN
MIDGET DOUBLEHEADER THIS SATURDAY AT THE PAS!
|
(APRIL 19, 2004, PERRIS, CA) Last Saturday’s rain and gray clouds had a
silver lining for Southern California open wheel racing fans as the rained out
Valvoline USAC/CRA Sprint Car show has been rescheduled as part of a great open
wheel doubleheader with the USAC Western Midgets this Saturday night at Perris
Auto Speedway in the Gosch Ford Shootout presented by Temecula Valley Pipe &
Supply and Vista Paint.
The battle for the points lead in the Valvoline USAC/CRA series is in mid season
form as the top five are only separated by 45 points. Concord’s Damion Gardner
is the new point leader. Yorba Linda’s Rip Williams is 14 digits behind in
second and Ojai’s Troy Rutherford, Cory Kruseman of Ventura and Mike Kirby of
Torrance follow him closely.
Kirby, in his first year driving for owner Glen Crossno, will be looking for his
third straight victory at The PAS. On April 10th, Kirby, the 1993 CRA Champion,
and Gardner traded the lead back and forth in one of the best main events ever
staged at the 8-year old facility. Kirby took the lead for good on lap 21 and
beat Williams and Gardner to the Eddie Ramirez checkered flag in a crowd
pleasing 30-lapper.
In addition to Gardner, Kirby, Williams and Rutherford, former PAS winners Steve
Ostling of Corona and Tony Jones of Orange will be in Saturday’s star-studded
field.
Also on Saturday, the USAC Western Midgets will be making their first appearance
at The PAS since 2002. Manhattan Beach’s Garrett Hansen, fresh off the first
midget win of his career last Saturday at Ventura, leads the midget contingent
into The PAS. Popular Wally Pankratz (Orange), who was the 2000 series champion,
4-time series champ Robbie Flock (Murrieta), 1995 NARC Sprint Car Rookie of the
Year Johnny Rodriguez (Elk Grove) and Jerome Rodela (El Monte) will be among the
main contenders for Saturday’s midget money.
Spectator gates will open at 5:00 PM on Saturday.
