(APRIL 7, 2004, PERRIS, CA) Just when you thought the competition could
not get any tougher for the Budweiser Bash at Perris Auto Speedway this Saturday
night, it did just that! Jeremy Sherman, one of the most exciting sprint car
drivers in the Southwest, has thrown his hat into the ring and is one of the
favorites for the 30-lap Valvoline USAC/CRA main event victory.
Sherman, who calls Phoenix, Arizona home, is no stranger to racing on The PAS
half-mile. In fact, his dashes from deep in the field to the front of the pack
have endeared him to the Southern California fans. And, he turned in one of the
most exciting rides in the track’s history at last year’s $30,000.00 to win
Oval Nationals. Starting 21st in the 50-lap main event, Sherman weaved his way
through the traffic to finish second behind Cory Kruseman. As he clawed his was
to second place, the talented 27-year old passed such superstars as J.J. Yeley,
Brent & Bud Kaeding, Damion Gardner, Richard “The Gasman” Griffin, Cary
Faas, Mike Spencer, Jac Haudenschild, John Scott, Troy Rutherford, Tracey Hines,
Tony Elliott, Levi Jones and Josh Wise.
Last month Sherman thrilled his hometown fans with another such performance in
the Gary Sokola Classic at Manzanita Speedway. Starting 17th, he fearlessly
steered his car to another second place finish against a superstar field. Making
that feat more incredible is the fact that he did it driving with a 360 cubic
inch engine against a field of 410 cubic inch giants.
Sherman has met with success while competing with USAC in the past. In 1995 he
won the USAC Western States Midgets Rookie of the Year Award. Three years prior
to that, he won the same award with the Arizona Midget Racing Association.
The biggest win in his relatively young career came in 2001 when he won the
prestigious Western World Championships at Manzanita Speedway. One year later he
won the 360 version of the Western World Championship.
This weekend Sherman will be in the National Cold Storage/Shaver Specialties
sprinter owned by Anne Wilkerson. Wilkerson’s husband, Billy, won CRA
Championships in 1967 and 1970 and will be inducted into the National Sprint Car
Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Iowa later this year.
Will Sherman have it easy at The PAS on Saturday? Hardly so with the likes of
Damion Gardner, Rip Williams, Mike Kirby, Troy Rutherford, Steve Ostling, Tony
Jones, Mike Spencer and a host of others looking to take home first prize in the
Budweiser Bash at The PAS presented by Temecula Valley Pipe & Supply and
Vista Paint. As sprint car Hall of Famer Bubby Jones likes to say, “This one
is gonna’ be tough. You better bring your spurs.”
Spectator gates will open at 5:00 PM on Saturday.
