(APRIL 4, 2004, PERRIS, CA) Fresh off his first win for car owner Ron
Chaffin at King’s Speedway, Damion Gardner hopes to make it two in a row and
take over the point lead when the Valvoline USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series makes
it’s second visit to Perris Auto Speedway this Saturday night at the Budweiser
Bash at The PAS presented by Temecula Valley Pipe & Supply and Vista Paint.
Driving Chaffin’s famous Temecula Valley Pipe & Supply/Arizona Race Mart
bright red #50 car, Gardner took the lead from veteran Mike Kirby on lap 12 of
the 30-lap main event and led the remainder of the way at King’s Speedway
(Hanford, California) last Saturday. He became the fourth different winner in
the first four races of the highly competitive series. Yorba Linda veteran Rip
Williams was second with Cory Kruseman, of Ventura, third.
The victory left Gardner in second place and only 19 points behind Kruseman in
the chase for the title and the lions share of the 2004 point fund. However,
Kruseman will be driving for Tony Stewart in the USAC National Sprint Car Series
opener in Nashville, Tennessee on Saturday. That will give Gardner, who has
posted 8 main event wins at Perris over the past two seasons, a tremendous shot
at taking over the lead in the standings.
It will also open the door for Williams, Ojai’s Troy Rutherford and Kirby
(Torrance). They are ranked third through fifth in the title hunt. Kruseman’s
Alexander Racing teammate, Jordan Hermansador of Long Beach, is sixth in the
points.
To make things even tougher on Saturday, Corona’s Steve Ostling and Tony Jones
will be on hand. Ostling, who missed the first three Valvoline USAC/CRA races of
the year, placed fourth last Saturday while driving for Northern California’s
Mike Sala. This Saturday Ostling will be back behind the wheel of the familiar
Fischer Motorsports #29. That is the ride he steered to victory in the
prestigious 2002 Jack Kindoll Classic at The PAS.
Jones, who won the 2000 Oval Nationals at The PAS, sat out last Saturday after
destroying a car two weeks prior in Phoenix. His team, led by veteran crew chief
Bob Hoskins, was busy putting a brand new car together to rejoin the exciting
2004 Valvoline USAC/CRA championship chase.
Spectator gates will open at 5:00 PM on Saturday.
