(FEBRUARY
29, 2004, PERRIS, CA) Fans
attending Perris Auto Speedway on Saturday night will see history being made
when Temecula Valley Pipe & Supply and Vista Paint present the first ever
race in the brand new Valvoline USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series with the running of
the Temecula Valley Pipe & Supply Showdown at The PAS.
Over the past
couple of months fans have been asking what will be different from the sprint
car racing they have come to know and enjoy at The PAS over the years.
Simply put the answer is, not much at all.
The cars will be a bit lighter and they can have an engine offset.
The cars will look the same and they will be driven by the same PAS
favorites such as Mike Kirby of Torrance, Tony Jones of Orange, Troy Rutherford
of Ojai, Yorba Linda’s Rip Williams & Cary Faas, Concord’s Damion
Gardner, Steve Ostling of Corona and a host of others.
Richard Griffin has retired and Gardner will replace him in Ron
Chaffin’s red #50.
No doubt, the
sprint car racing at The PAS has always been exciting.
However, it will be even better now!
Why? The elimination of the
dash! The dash consisted of the
fastest eight qualifiers who transferred from the heat races.
The first three rows of the dash were inverted.
The seventh and eighth fastest transfers started in the back row of the
dash. The way they finished the
dash, is the way they started the main event straight up.
That meant the fastest cars on the night normally started in the first
two rows.
The Valvoline
USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series will revert back to a more traditional format like
CRA ran at Ascot and other tracks. The
first four rows in the main event will be made up of the fastest eight
qualifiers who transfer from the heat races.
Those four rows will be inverted. Meaning
the fastest qualifier of those transfers will start eighth, second fastest
started seventh and so one to the pole where you would find the slowest of the
eight.
Perris
Auto Speedway promoter Don Kazarian is excited about the new format.
“We have decided as a group of track owners and promoters that we
wanted to go back to a more traditional format with four heat races.
Eliminate the dash. Transfer
the top four from each heat race and invert the fastest eight transfers (by
qualifying times) in the main event. We think it is going to make it a much
better show. You will see a lot of
the faster guys starting in the fourth row of the main event and I think we will
see much more passing and lead changes.”
One very
important change has been made to that old format.
With CRA, if any of the fastest eight qualifiers did not transfer from
their heat race they would go to the B main.
If they transferred out of the B main, they would get their qualifying
time (s) back and start in the first four rows.
Not anymore! If they do not
transfer out of their heat races with USAC/CRA, the best they can start in the A
Main is ninth.
In addition to
the local stars, USAC National Series heroes Cory Kruseman of Ventura,
Campbell’s Bud Kaeding and Indiana’s Tony Elliott and Jon Stanbrough will be
on hand. Multi-time Northern
California Champion Andy Forsberg of Auburn will also make the trek down for
Saturday’s show.
Spectator
gates will open extra early at 3:00 PM for the significant race on March 6th
and the first 2,000 fans through the spectator gates will receive a free 4 X
7” inch PAS magnetic schedule courtesy of Ramona Tire.
The first race will begin at 7:00.
