November 8, 2004...Bud Kaeding of Campbell, Calif. won Saturday night's
37th NAPA
Auto Parts/Budweiser "Western World Championship" at Manzanita
Speedway in
Phoenix, Ariz., his second victory in the prestigious race. He caught Levi Jones
in traffic on lap 36 and led the final five laps of the 40-lap race in his Loan
City/High Five Pizza Maxim/Shaver in front of an overflow crowd at the 1/2-mile
dirt oval. Jones, who led the first 35 laps, finished second.
"I'm excited to win because Levi was really faster than us," said
Kaeding in victory lane. "It's nice to have my name part of the prestigious
list of previous race winners here." The victory boosted him past Cory
Kruseman into the runner-up spot in the final Valvoline/USAC National Sprint Car
standings.
Jay Drake of Val Verde, Calif. celebrated his initial USAC National title at the
conclusion of the race in which he finished eighth. The Hoffman Racing Team,
whose driver Tracy Hines finished sixth at Manzanita, earned the 2004 National
Car Owner's Championship.
Josh Wise, Charles Davis, Jr. and Damion Gardner rounded out the
"top-five" at the checkered flag. Gardner's finish left him 50 points
behind Valvoline USAC/CRA point leader Rip Williams going into the "Kindoll
Classic" CRA finale November 20 at Perris (Calif.) Auto Speedway. Williams
was 22nd in Saturday night's 40-lapper.
Mike Kirby was Saturday night's 20-lap "B Main" winner, while
Jeremy Sherman won the 15-lap "C Main." Tracy Hines (Thursday) and Jay
Drake (Friday) were the preliminary night fast qualifiers.
