SEPTEMBER 13, 2004...Mike Kirby of Torrance, Calif. led wire-to-wire in
Saturday
night's 30-lap Valvoline USAC/CRA Sprint Car feature at the Perris (Calif.) Auto
Speedway and now trails Series point leader Rip Williams by just 91 points. The
hotly-contested series championship now prepares for a September 25 race at
Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix, Ariz.
Kirby, in displacing Damion Gardner from the number two point ranking, notched
his second consecutive series win in the ITI Performance/Sander Engineering TCR/Downing.
Williams finished second, ahead of Mike Spencer, Steve Ostling and Troy
Rutherford.
Gardner, who slipped from second to third in the new standings, tagged the wall
early in Saturday night's race while running fourth. His eventual 20th-place
finish left him 101 points behind Williams in the point race. Kirby, who won the
last CRA Sprint Car title in 1993, now has five victories so far this season,
including four at Perris.
