KIRBY BACK IN VICTORY LANE WITH

SEPTEMBER 6, 2004...Mike Kirby of Lomita, Calif. has thrown his hat back
in the ring for the 2004 Valvoline/USAC CRA Sprint Car Series title, winning Saturday night's 30-lap feature at the Ventura (Calif.) Raceway, Kirby, who won the last CRA title in 1993, now trails series leader Rip Williams by only 93 points and runner-up Damion Gardner by only 38 going into this Saturday night's program at the Perris (Calif.) Auto Speedway. Mike Spencer appeared headed for his initial USAC triumph until a deflating tire slowed him on lap 28, allowing Kirby to take the lead in his ITI Performance/Sander Engineering TCR/Downing. Williams slipped past Spencer for second at the checkered flag, with Spencer, after leading the first 27 laps, taking third ahead of Rodney Argo and Gardner. Gardner recovered from a vicious flip during the opening heat race. Rick Ziehl and Troy Rutherford escaped separate flips on the opening lap of the feature. Kirby's victory was his fourth of the 2004 campaign. His first three came at Perris, where the series continues this Saturday.
