The Valvoline USAC/CRA Sprint Cars return to Perris (Calif.) Auto Speedway this
Saturday night for the "Firecracker 50," which includes the best
Fireworks Skyconcert in the Inland Empire presented by Budweiser.
Temecula Valley Pipe and Supply and Vista Paint present the program of racing on
the 1/ 2-mile dirt track, which will feature Rip Williams of Yorba Linda, Calif.
in his effort to protect his series point lead from challengers Damion Gardner,
Mike Kirby and Troy Rutherford. A big 50-lap feature event is on tap following
complete prelims.
Williams leads Gardner by 56 points, while Kirby is third in the standings, 46
behind Gardner, and Rutherford trails Kirby by only six.
Williams has three victories already this year as he tries to nail down his
first-ever series driving title. He also has three seconds and three thirds in
just 12 starts! Gardner has a pair of victories among his eight
"top-fives," while Kirby has three wins and four other
"top-fives" to his credit. Rutherford is still seeking his initial
USAC/CRA Sprint car triumph, although he won a USAC "special event"
Sprint race last year and a USAC Western Midget race this year at Perris. He has
a half-dozen "top-five" finishes and four fast qualifying efforts in
the 2004 USAC/CRA series to date.
In addition to Williams, Gardner and Kirby, the series has also produced feature
wins by Adam Mitchell, Cory Kruseman and Dave Darland.
