APRIL 26, 2004...Rip Williams of Yorba Linda, Calif. leads the new
Valvoline
USAC/CRA Sprint Car point standings after scoring his initial series feature
victory in Saturday night's 30-lap race at the Perris (Calif.) Auto Speedway.
Williams, seeking his first major racing title despite many career feature
wins, put his John Jory Corporation/Weld Wheels Stinger/Shaver into the lead on
lap 27 after chasing Damion Gardner for the first 26 laps. He led the final four
laps to beat Troy Rutherford, Jeremy Sherman, Mike Kirby and Jordan Hermansader.
Gardner slipped to 12th at the
checkered flag after stopping on the track due to contact with Williams while
battling for the lead.
Williams leads Rutherford by 18 points in the new standings entering a May 1
race at the 1/2-mile dirt Perris oval.
Kirby, a two-time USAC/CRA feature winner this year, was Saturday night's
fastest qualifier and ranks fourth in the new points.
Saturday's 30-lapper was halted on lap 18 when Adam Mitchell flipped. He was
unhurt, as was Dan Hillberg who flipped during the semi.
