CALIFORNIA COORDINATOR
by Dick Jordan

(April 15, 2004)
Chris Morgan of Ventura, Calif. has brought his vast knowledge and love of our
sport to his new position as USAC's Southern California Coordinator.
Morgan is a 31-year-old graduate of the University of California Santa Barbara
whose family has been involved in motorsports for years. His father, Cliff, has
been race organizer Jim Naylor's right-hand man at Ventura Raceway for nearly 20
years. After his motorsports debut at Ventura at age 14, Chris became a track
starter in 1988 and served in a similar capacity through 1992 at Ventura, Saugus
Speedway and the now-defunct Ascot Park in Gardena, Calif.
Chris flagged the USAC TQ Midgets in the early-1990s while assisting chief
starter Bryan Howard in the USAC Western Midget Series. He then became the chief
starter at Mesa Marin Raceway in Bakersfield in 1994 and at Saugus Speedway in
1995.
From 1995-1998 Chris was affiliated with the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series as a
chief starter and technical inspector and was involved in technical inspection
for various NASCAR events at western facilities.
In 1998 Chris became a consultant on program development and operations at the
brand-new Irwindale Speedway, then was elevated to race director in 1999. In
2000 he was named the track's Director of Operations and oversaw all racing and
facility operations at the motorsports complex through 2003.
In August of 2003 Chris developed "Motorsport Ventures," a consulting
and corporate events business serving the southwestern United States and the Jim
Russell Racing Drivers School. He was named to his new USAC post in February.
"I am extremely excited to have the opportunity to be involved in such an
exiting new venture," he says. "The history of CRA Sprint Car racing
in Southern California is legendary and with this new partnership between CRA
and USAC we look forward to reviving the glory days of sprint car and open wheel
racing for which this region is reknowned.'
