...The California Asphalt Sprintcar
Association has signed a three-year deal with American Racer Tires for the
upcoming 2005—2007 racing seasons.
“This is a great opportunity
for CASA to add a top-flight company and product to the partnership fold of our
still growing race club,” said CASA president Scott Clough. “For the first
time in our short history, we will be able to provide a tire fund contribution
to our season ending championship point fund thanks to Bob Martin of McCoy
Distributing/American Racer Tire.”
All CASA cars will be shod with
American Racer tires that essentially match the previous CASA specifications.
“American Racer manufactures a similar build tire to what we’ve used the
past two years,” notes Clough, “A similar width and circumference
right-rear, three stagger combinations for left-rears and some 11-inch front
tire combinations as well. Compounds will the 132 compound for right-rears and
131’s for the other three corners.” Pending final general membership
approval, the new tire rule is likely to be “grand-fathered-in” over the
first four races to enable CASA car owners to use up existing tire inventories.
It is anticipated that all CASA competitors will be required to use at minimum,
American Racer right-rears for race one, both rears for race two, add
right-fronts by race three and by the fourth scheduled race all competitors will
be required to use American Racer tires on all four corners. However, this grace
period is for the races scheduled, not individual competitors numbers of race
participation.
“We thought long and hard about
such a major change as this, and how it might impact our young club, but the
truth of the matter was that American Racer stepped up to offer us a great
package. They make a quality tire that costs significantly less per tire than
what we previously used, and our research indicated that the tires last longer
as well. They offered to contribute a per tire dollar figure to our point fund,
something we were unable to secure previously, and were willing to, actually Bob
Martin suggested, we could grand-father in the new tire to help defray the 2005
total tire bill for our competitors,” said Clough.
Regarding cross-compatibility
with other racing clubs - the new tire rule is now the only rule difference
between them - CASA looked hard at the numbers and the situation. The situation
finds several CASA cars supporting other clubs, but likely needing to buy new
tires anyway to be competitive. Those members can still do so if they choose. If
another club’s cars would like to participate in CASA events, they too would
likely have to use or buy new tires in order to win a CASA race and CASA will
have American Racer Tire inventory on hand to accommodate them. The numbers
indicate that it is best to secure CASA-specific interests ahead of maintaining
cross-compatibility with other clubs.
“We’re expecting a great
relationship between CASA and American Racer Tire, immediately and in the
future.” said Clough.
