9-28-04
– San Jose, CA. In an unusual set of circumstances, Nick Rescino Jr. and Bryan
Bullard each scored 197 points to tie for the Nevada State Sprint Car
Championship after a hard fought four race series at Carson City’s Champion
Speedway that included four, one-hundred lap feature events.
At
the conclusion of the fourth, and final, September 18th event at
Carson City - won by Bullard, a preliminary check of the point standings showed
Rescino’s qualifying efforts and previous three wins and an eighth place
finish in the finale, equaled the same tally as Bullard’s qualification points
and consistent, third place, second, second, and first place finishes in the
inaugural and hotly contested series.
As
there was never a provision built into the series for co-champions, and the
awards including a custom made Championship ring, could not be divided, both the
California Asphalt Sprintcar Association, who sanctioned the events, and the
Nevada State Sprint Car Championship Series promoters decided to conduct a joint
audit of the points and recap the entire series to ensure that the process was
error free. In preparation for the audit, CASA officers and the promotion staff
agreed to include a tiebreaker mechanism in the event the audit still revealed a
tie. Tiebreaker options discussed included number of feature wins, number of
trophy dash wins, as well as some unconventional ideas. The number of feature
wins option was rejected as the championship was initially designed as a point
championship and therefore series consistency was to carry the same merit as
winning individual races in the series. The same argument applied to trophy dash
wins, and as it turned out, both Rescino and Bullard would have remained tied as
each won a dash in the series. It was finally decided that along with standard
qualification points, awarded in descending order to the five fastest qualifiers
– 5,4,3,2,1 and standard main event finishing points, the trophy dashes would
be assigned a point value as well. The series ran six-car dashes among the
fastest six qualifiers and a similar descending value would be applied to the
dash finishes – 6,5,4,3,2,1.
When
the audit was conducted there was indeed a tie between Rescino and Bullard, 197
to 197. When the tiebreaker was applied, the point totals showed Nick Rescino,
Jr. to be the 2004 Nevada State Sprint Car Champion over a very formidable
opponent in Bryan Bullard — 211 to 206 points, a scant five-point margin.
CASA
and Champion Speedway wish to congratulate and thank both Nick Rescino, Jr. and
Bryan Bullard, and their respective race teams, for their excellent performances
on the track and their professionalism and understanding of the delay in
declaring a series champion. All parties understood the dynamics of the
situation and allowed for a complete and careful review, and everyone involved
provided the opportunity to handle the matter correctly.
Furthermore,
CASA and Champion Speedway extend sincere thanks and appreciation to all the
race teams and drivers who helped make this inaugural series so successful. CASA
and Champion are currently involved in plans for an even bigger and better
series for the 2005 season — tiebreaker included!
