– Carson City, NV. The incredible winning streak of Nick Rescino Jr. was
extended to ten in the 100-lap California Asphalt Sprintcar Association feature
event at Carson City’s Champion Speedway high-banked quarter mile. Rescino has
won ten straight CASA features and all three of the four-round Nevada State
Sprint Car Championship Series run to date. In winning tonight, Rescino extended
his points lead in both the CASA Championship title chase and the Nevada State
Series.
The
Carson City Chamber of Commerce couldn’t have ordered a better day
weather-wise, as 13 CASA sprinters signed into the pits on a warm sunny
afternoon that lasted throughout the evening. The racing proved just as hot in
front of the near capacity crowd, with Rescino’s Bayshore Racing
Engines/American Storage #11 setting fast time at 12.31 and defending CASA
champion Tony Iacobitti squeezing the Oval Chassis Research Special past 2002
Carson City champion Glenn Hopper on the last lap of the Mike Coy Concrete
Construction “trophy dash for cash” to take home a nice, crisp $100 bill
from Champion Speedway.
With
a full-field inversion, Marvin Mitchell elected to start at the rear of the
field moving the inside row up a notch, and San Jose’s Earle Stanton assumed
the point with Carson City’s Tom Haxall along side comprising row one for the
start. As the pair powered off turn four pulling the field to the line, contact
between the two resulted in Stanton riding over Haxall’s left front wheel and
spinning backwards into the outside retaining wall. Stanton was uninjured but
his Stanton/Erickson mount was through for the evening.
On
the ensuing restart, veteran campaigner Bob Beck of Carson City assumed pole
position on the grid and he and Haxall brought the field to speed and under the
green flag with Haxall gaining the advantage off turn two and down the back
stretch. Haxall lead for several laps until a turn four shunt involving
Iacobitti, local star Mike Ogden’s beautiful #7x and Marvin Mitchell. Both
Iacobitti and Ogden’s crews attempted to make repairs but were unable to
return to the action. Mitchell was able to rejoin the field.
Haxall’s
lead on the restart was immediately under fire from Bryan Bullard aboard Mike
McCreary’s Oval Chassis Research #71 and Bullard powered past Haxall to take
the point. Bullard lead for several laps but soon had the dark blue #11 of
Rescino breathing down his neck. Rescino charged under Bullard to take command
as the pair approached lapped traffic. A highly motivated Bullard kept
pressuring Rescino as they darted through lapped cars, passing on both the
bottom and top in the corners, and inside and out on the straights. Bullard’s
efforts to retake command of the race were hampered as many of the lapped cars
were involved in their own battles for position. Rescino seemed to catch solo
lappers and Bullard frequently encountered them in pairs making his pursuit of
Rescino that much more difficult.
As
Rescino and Bullard sliced through traffic, Minden Nevada’s Amy Barnes in the
Model Dairy #12 kept pace throughout the first 50 laps, giving strong chase to
the pair, often encountering the same two-wide lappers as Bullard. She had
passed Haxall near the quarter-mark of the race and Haxall held forth over mark
2002 Champion Speedway Rookie of the Year, Mark Beck. Hopper had worked his way
to sixth over Deer Park’s Alan Kaiser when at lap 50, the yellow flag waved
for debris in turn two. Under the yellow, race officials detected a small fire
under Haxall’s hood. The fire was quenched and Haxall was allowed to return to
his forth position for the restart.
As
the race resumed the top three of Rescino, Bullard and Barnes continued to hold
dominance over the balance of the field, however the balance of the field
continued to race each other in a very entertaining show for the fans. Cars were
dicing with one another in all manor of competition when fifth place Mark Beck
started showing small traces of smoke from his #4. A few laps later he guided
his mount back to the pits and retired from the fray. As the laps wound down,
Rescino held a straightaway lead over Bullard and more than a half-lap over
Barnes.
As
the checkers dropped on Rescino’s tenth consecutive victory, the hard fought
victory was his over worthy opponents, Bullard in second and third place Barnes.
Haxall held a very fine forth, recording 98 laps, Hopper took fifth over another
fine run of Alan Kaiser with both posting 97 laps. Scott Clough came home
seventh, over Bob Beck and Marvin Mitchell in eighth and ninth respectively.
Mark Beck was credited with a tenth place finish and Ogden, Iacobitti and
Stanton rounded out the scoring of the very entertaining hundred lapper.
The
“California Sprint Cars” return to California as the CASA race will be at
the high-speed half-mile Altamont Motorsports Park on Saturday, September 11th.
