August
20, 2004....Dear CASA members and other friends of Mike
McCreary,
On July 20th I was informed of Mike’s medical
diagnosis – pancreatic cancer. As little as four weeks ago his treatment
options were few and his doctors informed him that in a worst-case scenario, he
might have only a few months to live. Mike and his wife Carla have pursued some
alternative treatments, however they visited a liver specialist in San Francisco
yesterday, and at this point his outlook is as bad as presumed. The cancer has
affected his liver function and his specialist said Mike might only have as
little a couple weeks left. The most optimistic outlook is 3-5 weeks. The doctor
made it clear it might be more accurate to measure in days at this point. In
fact, the doctor even talked about Mike qualifying for hospice care, which is
not being pursued at this time. Mike is resting at home as of this writing.
Needless to say, my fears as to how much my dear friend’s
health has deteriorated and how much worse he looks in just the last week and a
half are being realized.
For the last month CASA has been planning a tribute race to
honor Mike and his great racing career. Initial plans are set for September 18th,
the last race of the Nevada State Sprint Car Championships at Champion Speedway
in Carson City, Nevada, the track where Mike began his career in 1964.
Regardless of Mike’s failing health, CASA is proceeding with plans for a large
barbeque at the track anticipating a chance to recognize Mike and all his
accomplishments over the last 40 years.
In light of the recent information, I urge those planning
to attend the tribute race not to wait until September’s race to send your
good wishes and prayers to Mike and his family. CASA is racing at Carson City on
August 28th and Mike is expecting be on hand. He has informed me that
he is also hoping to see a large car count for the race. For those unable to
attend, a special website guest book will be installed on both the CASA (www.casaracing.com)
and Oval Chassis Research (www.OCR71.com)
web pages. Friends and fans are invited to share a moment or story with Mike
that he and all his many friends can enjoy.
If you are able to visit Mike at the shop, please check
with Carla soon to see how much Mike is up to having visitors.
Sorry to bring you such bad news. It hurts us all to deal
with this.
