– Tracy, CA. It is becoming difficult to find superlatives to describe
Nick Rescino Jr’s. California Asphalt Sprintcar Association winning streak.
Dominating. Invincible. Awesome. All apply to Rescino’s hot streak that began
seven races ago, May 8th, in CASA competition. On a very pleasant Saturday
evening at Altamont Motorsports Park, Rescino extended his feature win streak to
seven straight wins, won the Mike Coy Concrete construction Trophy Dash, his
heat race, and set fast time in qualifying with a near-record 17.287, 104.124
MPH lap around the big half-mile oval.
CASA
presented a somewhat disappointing 11-car field as some CASA regulars opted for
different weekend activities, and unfortunately CASA Rookie of the Year
candidate Jared Consani, loaded up after hot laps suffering serious flu
symptoms. “He’s so sick. He tried but he just can’t go,” said his
father, Mike.
Ten
cars timed in, including new CASA member Anthony “Cannonball” Simone.
“Cowboy” Craig Smith had second quick time but had overheating gremlins all
evening, which lead him to scratch from the dash. Tony Iacobitti substituting
for a still ailing Mike McCreary, and OCR teammate Bryan Bullard were joined by
Simone in the dash, won by Rescino with a 3-wide pass entering turn one.
Bryan
Bullard took heat number one over Smith, Scott Clough, back from some major
repairs, and rapidly improving rookies Joe Hauck and Ryan Baumgartner. Rescino
won heat two over Iacobitti, Simone and Dan Gonderman. Glenn Hopper suffered a
shifter mechanism failure and could not make the heat race start.
Joe
Hauck’s red #85 and Simone’s black #10 paced the field to the green flag
with Simone getting out to a quick lead. Iacobitti, Bullard, Smith, and Rescino
all bolted towards the front, swapping spots and racing in tight formation until
Rescino gained the advantage over the pack. Locked in a tight battle, Iacobitti
spun to the bottom of turn four to bring out the night’s only caution flag.
During the caution, Smith noted continuing overheating problems with his #32 car
and retired to the pits, forfeiting his second position prior to the restart.
On
the restart, Rescino reasserted command of the race while Simone and Bullard
thrilled the fans with a torrid battle for second. Bullard ran inches behind
Simone’s bumper and tried all manner of passes but was repelled each time by
Simone. Iacobitti worked his way back through the field to fourth to join the
Simone-Bullard action and Baumgartner dispatched fifth running Hopper in the
closing laps. After 30 circuits Rescino held a commanding lead to win his record
extending, seventh straight CASA feature over Simone, Bullard, Iacobitti,
Baumgartner, Hopper, Gonderman, Clough, and Hauck.
The
CASA cars and stars return to Altamont Motorsports Park for Championship round
10 on July 31st.
