Rescino Continues CASA Tear
By Glenn Hopper

6-12-04 – Tracy, CA. Nick Rescino Jr. is fast approaching the “unbeatable” status his father, “Quick Nick” Rescino achieved during the many hot streaks of his Hall of Fame career. Nick Junior posted an unprecedented fourth straight California Asphalt Sprintcar Association feature win at Altamont Motorsports Park on a very comfortable evening to enjoy sprint car racing at the big half-mile.

Rescino started the speed fest by powering his Bayshore Racing Engines mount to a 104.522 MPH, 17.229 lap, fast time over a 15-car field. Third fast qualifier, Mark Monico denied Rescino’s bid for a clean sweep by hustling to wins in the Mike Coy Concrete trophy dash and heat number one, while USAC star Jeff Gardner, in his first race back from injuries sustained in a Silver Crown event last month, looked as sharp as ever in taking heat number two from his last place starting position. “I feel better in the car than I do walking around,” said Gardner, “but I’m doing and feeling much better.”

The CASA feature rolled off with Mike McCreary and his Oval Chassis Research teammate, Bryan Bullard securing the front row. As the green flag fluttered, Bullard edged his way to the point with Sequoia Institute’s Mark Monico, Gardner, in the Gardner Family #51, points leader Matt DeMartini aboard Ric Carr’s #03 and Rescino making the outside line pay off at the start. Rookie driver Ryan Baumgartner, making his first half-mile start, had some fuel pick up problems and the caution waved on lap seven. By then Rescino’s dark blue #11 had powered him to the lead for the restart.

The next 19 laps of green flag racing saw Rescino extend his lead slightly over Gardner, DeMartini and Monico who were engaged in a close, spirited battle for position over fifth place Bullard. The trademark close CASA competition that race fans enjoy took a turn for the worse on lap 26 when seventh running Larry Texeria’s “Bean Express” apparently broke a radiator hose in heavy traffic. The fluid spill at the high-speed entrance to turn three caught up Scott Clough, Mike McCreary and Allen Harney. McCreary was able to spin to a stop without contact but Clough, Texeria and Harney all skated into the cement wall simultaneously. All three cars suffered major damage and medical personnel transported Harney to Walnut Creek’s Kaiser Hospital where he underwent emergency knee surgery. Texeria was also examined at the hospital suffering right knee and lower left leg and foot contusions. Clough reported some general soreness but was cleared at the track by the medical staff.

Track officials, faced with a lengthy track cleanup, called the race official at 26 of the scheduled 30 laps. Rescino recorded his fourth win in a row over Gardner, DeMartini, Monico and Bullard. Glenn Hopper finished sixth followed by Texeria, McCreary, Clough, and Harney who were a lap ahead of Joe Hauck, Marvin Mitchell and Dan Gonderman when the race was called.

Strong running Rookie of the Year contender, Jared Consani suffered serious damage to his car in heat one after contact forced him into a spin which ended against the wall and ended his evening prematurely. He was okay but very disappointed.

The CASA cars and stars will return to Altamont next Saturday, June 19th for round eight of the CASA Championship Series.
