San Jose, CA. The California Asphalt Sprintcar Association
has just signed an 11th hour deal with Carson City’s Champion Motor Speedway
to expand its schedule of events at the high-banked quarter-mile paved oval.
Last minute management changes at the speedway resulted in the return of former
track owner and long-time promoter Les Kynett to his former post as general
manager/promoter. Kynett, with a wealth of experience in the racing industry,
immediately contacted CASA to offer four stand-alone, 100-lap sprint car shows
to the emerging second-year club. These races will be part of CASA’s overall
championship point program, however, the shows will carry a separate point
structure to determine the Nevada State Sprint Car Champion.
The format for the sprint car only race evening will
consist of traditional qualifying, a trophy dash, and a unique half-hour
autograph session in which all sprint cars and drivers will be presented on the
front straight where the fans will be able to join them on the track. Qualifying
will determine heat race lineups and the main event lineup will be determined by
fan activity, which will heavily favor a complete inversion. The details of that
fan activity are still pending.
“This is an exciting opportunity for CASA,” said CASA
President and CEO, Scott Clough. “As a young club with drivers looking to gain
valuable experience, 100 lap races affords our drivers lots of seat time.”
Added Clough, “While technically in Nevada, these races fall within our tow
distance limitations. It’s only a two to four hour tow for most of our
membership, and most of the four events have an off week prior to or after the
Carson date, and there is considerable work being done to provide CASA members
tow incentives including tow money, hotel accommodations, and fuel comps. Plus,
additional race sponsorship is in negotiation as well.”
Kynett stressed that with a 20 –24 car field up to four
heats could be run and that presenting the high-powered sprinters for 100 laps
of competition would assure a large crowd of spectators. “We have always
packed the place whenever we have advertised 100 lappers. The fans get really
excited to see 100 laps of action. It sets these races apart from standard,
shorter distance shows and people always remember and talk about the “big
hundred lappers” they saw,” said Kynett. “Also, the cars and stars of CASA
are an attraction themselves.”
Expected Nevada entrants include Model Dairy teammates Amy
Barnes and super modified star Eric Silsby, two entries from Beck Racing, Mark
Beck, winner of the most recent Champion Motor Speedway sprint car race, and his
dad, veteran Bob Beck. Local star Mike Ogden is also slated to defend the Silver
State honors from the California contingent.
The race dates are Memorial Day weekend, May 29, July 3rd
(Independence Day weekend), August 28th, and the Nevada State Sprint Car
Champion will be crowned on September 18th. Check the CASA website at: www.casaracing.com
