1979 Season Notes

  • 1979 marked the 20th year of operation for the Northern Auto Racing Club to sanction sprint car races. The 1979 season featured 25 points races at six dirt tracks.
  • Jimmy Boyd won the championship, driving for Vern Kornburst, and winning 3 feature events, 7 heat races, 4 trophy dashes, and 2 fast times.
  • Owner/Diver Mike Andreetta was the hottest driver on the circuit, winning a record 9 feature events, including 4 in a row. He recorded 6 out of 12 wins at the famed Calistoga Speedway.
  • Jimmy Sills had 2 feature wins and a club leading 6 fast times.
  • 1978 Champion LeRoy Van Conett scored 5 feature wins, taking his career total to 46 NARC wins.
  • Ed Organ earned Most Improved Driver honors.
  • Larry Landrith was Rookie of the Year and finished 12th in points.
  • In August, a NARC vs. CRA Civil War series began at Ascot Park. Leroy Van Conett took the win, followed by Ed Organ an Rip Williams.
  • The Civil War continued at Calistoga in October, with Billy Yon taking top honors in a non-stop 40 lapper (14:58:88). The event was marred by fatal injuries suffered by Lloyd Beard in the third heat race.
  • CRA legend Dean Thompson won a NARC/CRA event at Ascot Park.
  • Buster Venard won the NARC-CRA Civil War Championship, followed by Jimmy Oskie and Mike Andreetta.
  • 142 Drivers took a green flag in 1979 NARC Competition.
  • The 1979 NARC Purse was $128,734, with an average payoff of $5,149 per race.
  • 1979 was also the last year of operation of West Capitol Speedway in West Sacramento.
