CRA changed the name from the California Roadster Association to the
California Racing Association in 1957. 1953 thru 1956, sprint car bodies were
allowed and Skee Redican won the first ever CRA race with a sprint car body at
Corona Speedway in Corona Calif. driving for Louie Senter and Don Kishell.
February 23, 1975
Mike Sweeney, son of CRA star Max Sweeney and Lee James, son of long time CRA
president Walt James made their first ever CRA appearance on the same day
Sunday, Feb 23, 1975 at 605 Speedway (Irwindale)- it was a paved track. It was
also the first time back for Tony Simon since he lost his arm at Santa Maria,
Tony went on to win from the outside third row and it was in the same car he
lost his arm in.
April, 19, 1975
Gary Howard, the first driver to score a 19 second lap at Ascot, won his
first ever CRA main event upside down sliding 35 yards on his roll cage to the
start finish line at Speedway 605, it was the weekend of his 25th birthday.
June 7, 1975
Brothers Ron and Billy Shuman had a 1-2 finish on the Manzy 1/2
mile. It was the first CRA win for the 22 year old Ron Shuman. The winning car
was owned by Billy and Mike Boat's dad. The night also marked the first flip by
Jimmy Oskie in his first 12 years of CRA competition.
August 30, 1975
Paul Turner became the first driver to flip into the grandstands at Ascot,
weeks earlier Clark Templeman became the first CRA driver to flip into the Ascot
infield water pond.
1981 CRA Season
-The average car count was 53 cars per race.
-The KRACO/CRA Championship point
fund was $70,000 dollars.
