Final Points Buster Venard - 252, Jimmy Oskie - 201, Ed Organ - 186, Mike Andreeta - 162, Jimmy Boyd - 156, Steve Howard - 153, Ronnie Rea - 144, Dean Thompson - 106. Buster also won the Mid Winter Outlaw Championships in February and the second annual Summer Nationals in June, and finished second in CRA points for the year. On March 31, Mike Shaw hit the rut in turn 3 at Ascot during time trails and flipped the number 7 car into the bill boards. Mike was rushed to Gardena Memorial and lost his fight while on life support a few days later. Mike's accident really bothered Rick Goudy and at next week's race, there was a "close call" incident in the north turn. Rick blasted on for the win and the defending champion then stepped out of the Tamale Wagon in Victory Circle, shocking the crowd, pits and crew with his announcement of retirement. After Goudy, Clark Templeman drove the Tamale Wagon for a few races and then Steve Howard. Howard won not long after taking over the ride.
