The point battle at the end of the year was decided on the last race between
point leader Rick Goudy and challenger Bobby Olivero, Olivero took the
championship by 15 points, it was, at the time, the closest championship
finish in CRA history. Bobby in the Tamale Wagon, had a 4th place finish to
Goudy's 11th, it also gave the Tamale Wagon team their 5th CRA Championship.
The car count average was 42 cars per race and 17 different drivers won main
events.
Bob East had the most fast times with 13.
Olivero led the dash victory total with 6, Bobby also had led the most main
event laps in 1975 with 253.
Rick Ferkel dropped in at Manzanita in March, set a new 1 lap track record by
almost a full second, a new 3 lap record and a new 10 lap heat race record,
Ferkel's main event win was by more than 70 yards over Rick Goudy, before the
victory interview, Ferkel went to Goudy's pit to thank him for a clean race and
congratulate him on his second place finish.
1975 was also the year 37 year old Max Sweeney won his first CRA main event
and Lee James won rookie of the year.
Illinois native Bubby Jones made several starts in the #19 Morales Bros.
"Tamale Wagon."
Clark Templeman crashed and landed in in the middle of Ascot's north turn
infield lake on August 30th. Also on this date, Paul Turner became the first
driver to flip into the Ascot grandstands. Turner has lost his brakes and
vaulted over Jay East into unoccupied lower seats. Turner was unhurt, but East
was hospitalized for a week.
Rear-engined sprinters were rare in the 1975 Season. Of the 2 in competition,
the #71 Greg Pieper Chevy had Wally Pankratz as one of it's drivers.
