JULY 22, 2007...While the several USAC/CRA teams that took
the long haul to Indiana Sprint Week did not knock them dead, I hear
the weather was pretty cool from past years of intense heat. Cory
Kruseman and Scotty Weir did the best of our So Cal
heroes, but there’s was not really very good results, as the
reports are typically of dusty dry slick tracks at most of the
events. That shows us once again we just don’t do dry slick well!
As long as we have been traveling back east, success is always
measured by the amount of water in the race tracks, not on it. When
it was wet, we did very well, when it was not, we did not. That’s
reality and with our wetter tracks out west, things won’t change
for those who don’t move back there to learn that dry world like Damion
Gardner just did. Hopefully the local guys who stayed home are
getting refreshed for the stretch run of the season. Congrats to Dave
Darland for winning the Sprint Week title as the “old” guy
continues to show the youngsters up.

The Wagsdash drum is now beating again as it is time to collect
the purse that is only at $1000 right now. Over the years the 17th
annual event has always been supported by the fans and friends of
the Wagtimes promotions. The Wagsdash is always run for the drivers
who have the smallest budgets, as best we can tell, so is known as
the low buck racers race. It will be run under the USAC/CRA rules
and regulations at Ventura Raceway on October 6th this year, with
drivers picked and lined up by me using my 16 years of experience in
this fun adventure. The 17th annual will be another big success, so
be part of it!
In the past, drivers of those car owners who received Wagsbucks
would be automatically entered in the Wagsdash, except for drivers
who have won more than one 410 main event with the So Cal
“club”, or the Wagsdash race itself. Alan Ballard and Marc
Hart are two who have won the dash twice and won't be invited
anymore, they had their fun. Since the weekly Wagsbucks sputtered
out not long ago, I will attempt to hand pick the field with the
idea to have a good race and give some money to deserving low buck
drivers.
The Wagsdash pays $2500 to win and $500 to start, depending on
the final totals. Over the years the Wagtimes collections are now up
to nearly $500,000, with the highest one day Wagsdash total of
$23,000. Since 2003 the average has been around $16,000 and we look
to beat that average this year. All the money collected thru
whatever Wagtimes fundraisers, goes into the purse like always, with
no “fees” taken out.
The Ventura VRA winner and hard charger from the race before the
Wagsdash are always invited. The winner from the prior year is also
invited, and since Alan Ballard won last year and is now
ineligible, and even though Blake Miller has won two main
events this year, Blake will be invited. Several drivers will be
added before the race. The first group invited include Tyler
Brown, Kevin Kierce and David Cardey, all of whom had
very nasty crashes in CRA competition this season.
There are many ways to get involved: (1) Donating cash is the
easiest. (2) Donate items for the annual auction is another way. I
already have a full collection of Flat Out Magazines and a couple of
pics in the auction cache. (3) You can sponsor the annual Ellen
Ellis non wing calendar. Put your name or business on a page for
$100, or take the whole page for $300. Since the calendar goes to
press next week (!!!!) you will have to call me at 949-981-5497
right away or e-mail us at www.winglesswarriors@aol.com. Mrs Wags
plans to have the completed calendar ready for the Labor Day race,
so time is of the essence. (4) Get your name or business on the
annual Wagsdash T-shirt. Spots are available for $100 or $200 on the
back and $500 or $1000 on the front. When you see me, just come up
and talk about how you can help, it will be appreciated very much by
those low buck racers who will benefit that day.
The success of Wagsdash starts with the Wagtimer’s who prod me,
work hard to make the race day great, and who do everything it takes
to make it happen while I am off collecting money. They will be
cooking the Chili again this year and another thanks to John and
Maria Gardner for doing that chore last year for us. Thanks to all
of you, without your help it could never have happened for the last
16 years, it’s somewhat of a miracle. For the Wagtimes workers,
the flame shirts will be worn this year.
Remember that Glenn Howard is the Wagsdash Grand Marshall this
year and lets pray he will be up to the festivities of the day. They
will include the annual Pit stop contest, the sexy dirver contest,
the Wagtimes auction and a few other surprises.
This is a long waiting period for most of us who are use to going
racing nearly weekly, but I plan to be at Santa Maria to support
Danny Sheridan next weekend and will be at the PAS the next week. I
will miss the next few races after that for various things,
including a trip to Cooperstown, New York for a tournament my
grandson Hunter will play in. I think I’ll get to a Yankee game
just to see the old stadium and of course the Baseball Hall of Fame
on that trip.
Thanks for all the help and in the immortal words of Kim Donner,
let’s go racin’!!!
