Bakersfield, CA., Sept. 9 - West Evans
won his second career NMRA-TQ
Midget 25-lap feature Saturday at the banked third-mile clay
Bakersfield Speedway.
It was his first main event triumph since May 22, 2004 at Santa
Maria Speedway. He became the fourth different NMRA main event
winner this season. The Moorpark resident drove his No. 36 Stealth/Clerc
Suzuki in round eight of the currently scheduled nine- race season.
Evans was one of three leaders of the 13-car race that had five lead
changes. Rookie Scott Dobson led the first nine laps. Kenny Wiley
paced laps 10-11. Evans led laps 12-16. Wiley was back in front on
lap 17. Evans then led laps 18-25 for the victory.
Honda-powered Bruce Hiroshima finished second, half a length behind
Evans.
Point leader Chuck West finished third in the No.
38 Evans-owned car, with Richard Ortega, Jr fourth. West Evans
Motorsports prepared three of the top four cars for a most
successful weekend. West was the 2002 NMRA champion in a car owned
by his cousin and fellow driver Evans. Ortega won NMRA 2005 rookie
of the year honors. Ron Ahrendt, Michael Bliffen, Wiley, Steve Parke,
rookie Jenna Bliffen, daughter of Michael, Chris Hedge, Ron Capps,
Dobson and Richard Marshall were the other finishers.
West won the first 8-lap heat race and Evans took
the second heat race. West increased his point lead from 53 to 58
points over new runner-up Hiroshima. The Evans Motorsports No. 38
car, driven by West, now leads car owners point standings by 54
points over Hiroshima's No. 5. The recent removal of three races
scheduled on September 23, October 7 and October 28 at San
Bernardino's Orange Show Speedway because of a track management
change has reduced NMRA's total scheduled races to nine. The final
scheduled race this season will be Saturday, November 11 at the
recently reopened three-eight mile clay Kings Speedway, in Hanford.
