San Bernardino, CA., Sept. 3 - Chuck
West won his first NMRA-TQ Midget 25-lap main event of the year
Saturday at the quarter-mile, paved Orange Show Speedway. It was his
third career NMRA feature victory and it came in the ninth race of
the 11-race season. The 2002 series champion from Fresno drove the
No. 38 Stealth/Kawasaki owned by his cousin and fellow driver West
Evans. The winner took the lead on lap 10 from early leader Steve
Parke and led the rest of the race.
Point leader Jody Bandfield, a three-time feature
winner this year, finished second in his own car. Walt Johnson,
another three-time 2005 winner and title-contender, finished third
in the Welcomer-owned, Johnson-built Honda. Bruce Hiroshima was
fourth and Kenny Wiley fifth. Michael Bliffin, Evans, Parke, Richard
Ortega, Jr and rookie Scott Dobson completed the top ten in a 14-car
field.
Bandfield and Johnson won eight-lap heat races.
Polestarter Johnson took the trophy dash for the four fastest
qualifiers. Wiley, Bandfield, and west followed. Bandfield had fast
time honors with a lap of 13.362, which beat NMRA's two-month old
track record of 13.397 set by West two months ago. The
final two NMRA races scheduled this year are at Ventura Raceway on
October 15, and the fourth race this season at Orange Show Speedway
on October 22.
