Oildale, CA., Aug. 6 - Walt Johnson won
his third three-quarter midget 25-lap main event of the eight-race
old season Saturday night at the banked, third-mile Bakersfield
Speedway. It was his fifth feature triumph in NMRA. He drove the
Robert and Cynthia Welcomer-owned chassis that he built. The car
used a Priestley Honda for power. It was the fourth main event
victory this season for the car owners. Jody Bandfield drove the
Welcomer No. 15 to victory May 28 at Bakersfield while
builder/driver Johnson was attending a family gathering.
Chuck West, NMRA's 2002 champion, West Evans,
Kenny Wiley and Bruce
Hiroshima finished second through fifth respectively. Michael
Bliffen, Richard Ortega, Jr, 2003-04 NMRA champion Steve Lambert,
Scott Taylor and newcomer Richard Marshall rounded out the top ten
in a 13-car field. Wiley led the first nine laps. Johnson paced laps
10-25.
Lambert and Bandfield, driving his own No. 4 car,
won a pair of eight-lap heat races. With the cancellation of three
remaining races at Santa Maria Speedway, the next NMRA race will
take place Saturday, September 3 at the quarter-mile, paved Orange
Show Speedway in San Bernardino. It will be the third race at the
track this year.
