McCormick returned to action in a TQ Midget Saturday when NMRA-TQ
Midget campaigners returned to Bakersfield Speedway. The San
Fernando Valley driver drove Greg Edenholm's No. 1 Hart chassis,
with a 760 cc Suzuki providing power, to his first NMRA-sanctioned
victory in a 20-lap main on the banked, third-mile clay track. He
took the lead on lap eight and led the final 13 laps.It was
McCormick's first race of the season and the second for NMRA
following a rain-out a week earlier at Santa Maria following warm-up
laps.
Bruce Hiroshima, NMRA's 2004 rookie of the year,
led the first seven laps and finished a personal best second in his
own No. 70 car. Jody Bandfield drove his No. 4 car to third place.
Walt Johnson took Robert & Cynthia Welcomer's Johnson chassis/Priestley
Honda to fourth position. He extended his point lead from four to
five points.Chuck West, the NMRA 2002 champion, rounded out the top
five finishers in a 14-car field.
Steve Parke, Kenny Wiley, 2003-04 champion Steve
Lambert,West Evans and Ron Ahrendt completed the top ten. Hiroshima
and Bandfield won the pair of eight-lap, seven-car heat races. The
next NMRA race will take p[lace Saturday, May 14 on the paved
quarter-mile Orange Show Speedway in San Bernardino.
