IRWINDALE, Calif., Mar. 26 - Fastest
qualifier Alex Harris, 27, started sixth in his own three-year old
TCR chassis and won his first USAC Ford Focus California paved track
series feature Saturday at Irwindale Speedway. The 35-lap race was
his first competition on the track's third-mile. The USAC 1997-98 TQ
Midget Series champion, a past winner on the USAC Western States
Midget circuit, took the lead on the eighth lap and won by 0.790
seconds.
Audra Sasselli, from Fresno, started second in
her family-owned Stealth and led the first seven laps in a 20-car
field that included six rookies from the karting ranks. She chased
Harris to the finish of a race slowed by three yellow flags and
trailed the winner by 15-yards. Sasselli, by virtue of second place
finishes in both races this season, took the series point lead by 25
points (129-104) over former leader Matt Triplett, the winner at
Blythe, Calif. on February 5.
FF Midget rookie Darrell Herzog, in one of four
Ron Sutton cars, finished third. Steve Davis and teenager Chase
Barber completed the top five. Fifteen of the 20 starters finished
and 13 drivers were on the lead lap. The second of six scheduled
USAC FF Midget Series races this season at Irwindale Speedway will
be held next Saturday night.
