February 9, 2005...
Damion Gardner ran away with the 30 lap feature last Saturday at
Perris Auto Speedway leading the last 19 laps on his way to the
victory. Damion almost had a clean sweep of the night with fast
time, winning the trophy dash and the main event. The racing
surface was the best I’ve ever seen for a day race.
Gardner’s quick time was a 16.087 almost eclipsing his own
track record of 15.954. Second quick was "Super"
Rickie Gaunt with a 16.210 and third quick was Tracy Hines with
a 16.385.
The four fastest qualifiers were placed into the first
ever Snap On Tools Trophy Dash. The dash turned out to be a
little two eventful. On the first lap Tracy Hines slide a little
wide in turn one and hit the wall riding out a nasty flip ending
in turn two. That wasn’t all that happened in the dash. Pole
setter Danny Sheridan look to be headed to the first annual snap
on tools dash when Damion Gardner gave him a giant slide job
going into turn three, Damion bounced off the cushion and did a
giant wheel stand down the front stretch to the win.
With the big car count of 47 cars they had to run a C main
with the top four going to the back of the heat races. The C
main was won by the 2004 Usac/Cra rookie of the year Ronnie
Case. Following him to the heats were Danny Ebberts, Jordan
Hermansader and Rusty Carlisle.
The heat races were a little hard to pass cause of how
greasy it was on the low side. David Cardey ran away with the
first heat leading all of the 10 laps in Giardina # 59. Second
heat was won by Seth Wilson in his twister chassis with one of
the more original paint jobs out there. Cory Kruseman took the
third heat in the Crossno #38 and Steve Ostling took the forth
heat in Buzz Shoemaker’s # 0. The B main was won by
"Super" Rickie Gaunt.
Bill Rose jumped out to the early lead in the main event
in his own # 6. Quickly Gardner jumped from his 5th place
starting spot into second and began to challenge Rose for the
lead early. Tracy Hines was battling Rick Williams when the two
came together on the back stretch and broke Tracy’s front end
sending him spinning into turn three. Rickie Gaunt had no were
to go and clipped Tracy and started flipping, right behind
Rickie came Danny Sheridan who also had no place to go and
struck Rickie in the drivers cage. Rickie was ok but his day was
done. Rose still had the lead on the restart but Damion used the
low side in turn three to take the lead from rose on lap 11.
Mike Spencer was having a good run in his # 44 but it all went
bad in turn one when he took and bad series of flips almost
landing on top the crash wall. Also involved in that was Davis,
Kruseman and Faas. All restarted but Spencer. Damion cruised to
his first win of the year leading the last 19 laps on the way to
victory.
