Brandon Thomson has exhibited steady
improvement this season. This
youngster, in his late teens, has shown that experience is an asset
in sprint car racing. Last
year as a raw rookie, he struggled with his car and also the racing
learning curve. Mechanical
failures caused a number of setbacks, with engines expiring, used
parts giving up and driver errors causing the team to spend many
hours of midnight oil to prepare the racecar for action the
following Saturday night.
This season started with fresher equipment, a
crew better experienced in preparation and a driver who was able to
break some bad habits and become competitive on the track.
Brandon has shown signs of brilliance with direct transfers
from the heat race to the feature.
Thomson has been more stable on the track, therefore moving
forward. He has
exhibited a smoother driving style, yet quicker, with his ability to
take it to the top and drive around other racecars.
Thus, this season, helped by the fact that his equipment has
been more reliable, Thomson has scored heat race victories and
higher finishes in the nightly features,
On Saturday, September 30, it all came together
for the Thomson family team. Brandon
was placed on the front row for the feature, partly from “luck of
the draw” and also due to success in his heat race, transferring
him to the Main Event. As
the green flag unfurled, Thomson was on the gas and assumed the
lead. Quickly
establishing a good line around the track, he was able to go fast
and hold off challengers. Leading
for half to two-thirds of the feature, a bobble in traffic, let
veteran driver, Kevin Kierce slip past into the lead.
Brandon didn’t give up though and dogged Kierce putting a
nose under him on several occasions.
Behind Thomson were the two point leaders, Luis Espinoza and
Jimmy Crawford along with the leading feature winner, Greg Taylor,
but none could upset the mission that Brandon was on this night.
At the checkers, Kierce prevailed for yet
another win, while the crowd cheered the second place warrior this
evening, Brandon Thomson. This
youngster didn’t grasp the brass ring tonight, but he could see
the shine!
