Slipping in stealthily on Saturday will be the
vaunted USAC/CRA 410 Traditional Sprint Cars, along with the
supporting cast of VRA Senior Sprints.
Can’t get much better than that!
But wait; as the racers are queuing up at the pit gate, there
is much commotion along the midway and the aroma of a Southwestern
Fiesta.
Picnic tables are fanned out with pristine
table clothes befitting an event of this magnitude.
Many conference tables have become display media for the many
items to be auctioned off later in the evening.
There is a stage or maybe a runway of sorts, where some of
the grizzled, brave drivers will strut their stuff in pursuit of the
“Sexy Driver title for 2004”, a much more coveted moniker that
simply champion. Also
today, we will observe sprint cars in competition on asphalt!!
Of course, it will be the annual Pit Stop contest, an event
not witnessed on the clay ovals.
Off to one side is a 40-quart pot, filled with costly aged
beef, field picked tomatoes and beans plucked from the vine as they
ripened. There are also
those unmentionable items, like Armadillo feet, rattlesnake and some
of the mildest jalapenos, OH YEAH!!
Topping it all off is a blend of the finest chili powders
this side of Chiapas. Multi-time
Mexican National Champion, Steve Ostling will certify Mrs. Wags
Chili as the National Chili for all Mexico.
Of course this is the Fourteenth Annual
WAGSDASH and the festivities began at noon.
Ken and Terry Wagner have choreographed this event through
its lifetime, collecting funds through fan donations, to pay the
purse. Take time to peruse the items for the silent
auction and put in a bid. Just
remember, your wife always wanted a wall mural of John Richards and
there is the authenticated Jimmy Oskie collector t-shirt.
How about a Tony Simon driving glove?
Why you can do all of your Christmas shopping in one day!
Don’t forget to pass by the Bake Sale for munchies after
the Chili.
Just remember to spend freely as all the
proceeds go into this evening’s DASH purses and assorted other
rewarding activities. While
most racers back east would welcome an opportunity to compete at
Ventura this evening, you will only be able to see the best in the
west.
Reports of ice storms have been grossly
exaggerated, but a word of warning that cool ocean breeze in the
afternoon can become a little nippier as the evening wears on, so
bring warm clothing. Most
of all come early enjoy the festivities and top it off with some
great racing. It’s a
win-win situation.
