This
was the ninth event in the twelve-day odyssey known as the NWWC tour.
After tonight’s show, it would be over for this year and teams would be
making the trek back west.
Racers started staging in the
pits before three o’clock in anticipation of the BBQ provided by the track for
all the racers, crews, officials and media people. This is annual ritual, with promoter, Marc Olson donning the
chef’s hat and apron to serve up this fine repast to the visiting racers.
As the competitors filled their tummies, the track crew was putting the
final touches on the track. Joining
the sprinters once again were the factory stocks that had run on Thursday.
These narrow-tired vehicles did a great job of shaving off the glaze,
created by the wide sprint car tires.
After the early afternoon
social, it was back to business for the race teams.
Twenty-five cars were on hand for tonight’s show.
Several drivers had taken a charter jet to Springfield, Illinois for the
100 mile Silver Crown race on Saturday afternoon and then returned to Kansas
City for tonight’s event.
The track again appeared to be
very racy and Brian Tyler set fast time at 16.806. Mike Kirby and Rip Williams claimed the two heat victories.
The Dash was comprised of the top four from last night’s show followed
from the fastest four qualifiers from tonight’s heats to fill the top eight
feature starting spots. Damion Gardner grabbed the victory over Bud Kaeding, J.J.
Yeley, Richard Griffin and Cory Kruseman. This
put the “Demon” on the pole for the feature.
Blake Feese claimed the Semi over Rickie Gaunt, Rodney Argo and Adam
Mitchell.
Twenty-four
cars staged for the feature and it was a donnybrook from the beginning.
Cars ran high and low, dicing for positions, with some patented slide
jobs. Kruseman ended up spinning
into the turn one wall and departed for the evening.
Later Gardner did a 360 between turns 1 & 2, but kept going after
losing a number of spots. On the
final lap, Bud Kaeding again was victorious, followed by Griffin, Tony Jones,
Bobby Graham and Rip Williams.
