Twenty-seven
sprint cars were on hand for tonight’s show.
Once again, the track was in excellent shape and many of the fans from
last night’s crowd had returned.
Early
qualifiers turned laps in the seventeen-second bracket, before Levi Jones broke
into the sixteen’s. A few
cars later found the “Demon”, Damion Gardner setting a new track record at
16.732. Heat races found wins going
to Yeley, Kruseman and English. Bud
Kaeding bested Griffin and Yeley in the Dash and Midwesterner, Blake Feese took
the Semi, followed by Missourian, Jesse Hockett.
Tonight’s companion class was
the “Good Old Times Racing Association” out of Nebraska. The cars appear like the old hard tops or Modifieds that were
so popular in the fifties and sixties. These
are actually new cars, but they sure give a jolt of nostalgia.
After their demonstration feature, twenty-two cars lined up for the NWWC
Main Event. The top four from
tonight’s show would automatically go into tomorrow night’s feature, while
the balance would re-qualify on Saturday and run heats to set the stage for the
Dash, Semi and the $10,000 to win feature and possession of the pedal car
trophy. Bud Kaeding and Richard
Griffin started on the front row, followed by J.J. Yeley and Levi Jones. Kaeding, Griffin and Yeley put on a dice for the lead
throughout the twenty-lap feature, with Bud besting the “Gasman” and J.J.
Damion Gardner was able to come from eighth to grab the last transfer
position in the Saturday final.
Again, there was an enthusiastic
crowd and many took time to visit the pits after the races.
One sad note was that Weld Classic winner; Charles Davis Jr. broke a
camshaft in the first heat and would be heading for home as he had used up one
chassis and three engines in pursuit of the brass ring on the tour.
Davis and his team are a hard working group, who come to each race ready
to win and have suffered much distress this season.
Charles is good and fast, so beware, as he should soon claim his first
SCRA feature victory.
