Enjoying a good night’s rest,
we weary travelers were refreshed enough to venture out to some sights in the
local area. The first stop was at
the Eastern Museum of Motorsports at the Latimore Valley Fairgrounds.
My last session here was spent at the feet of Tommy Hinnershitz and Lynn
Paxton, who related many stories of racing feats over the past sixty years.
This time, I was able to concentrate on the beautifully restored racecars
and other memorabilia, exhibiting racing as it was in past years.
This
museum offers a good example of the cars and drivers that paved the way to
Motorsports that we enjoy today. In
addition to the cars and driver info, there is an extensive library with photos,
news articles, old programs, and etc., which can be used for research by writers
to verify information they have collected.
After a couple of hours
traveling down memory lane, we departed for nearby Gettysburg. When we found the Visitor Center overflowing, we decided to
just do some sightseeing and return on Monday for our Civil War lesson.
Cruising around town and veering off into the country, we realized hunger
pangs and spotted a burger joint called Distelfinks.
Our hamburgers set us back $1.17 each, while a homemade Peach Shake went
for $2.31 each. Two of us had a
delicious meal for under ten bucks.
At the end of a relaxing day
traveling down the back roads, we worked our way toward Lincoln Speedway,
tonight’s venue for the SCRA sprint cars.
