Wednesday
was a travel day as the California boys advanced east. Most of the day was spent traversing Iowa, Illinois and
Indiana, before finally entering Ohio. Some
made the whole commute, while others found a respite along the way and finished
their odyssey on Thursday morning. Now
three hours later than California and driving, we still suffered “Jet-Lag”.
Arriving in Fremont in the
mid-morning, track inspection was mandatory.
The clay looked good and it was wet, but the surface had not been cut too
deep and there were questions as to how fast it would dry out.
We had heard that the track surface was not too good for a USAC sprint
& midget show, a few weeks back.
Approaching the Holiday Inn, we
found many of the teams hard at work, performing routine maintenance and
preparing their equipment for tonight’s show.
Visits were made with the various teams, rehashing the Osky race and the
journey to Ohio.
Being unable to check in until
3p.m., a side trip was implemented. About
twenty miles straight north was Lake Erie, so we decided to see the Ohio version
of the Pacific Ocean. A peninsula
covered with many summer homes and a number of resorts and tourists traps led to
Marblehead Lighthouse, which was our destination.
Weather was almost perfect, clear and sunny, with mild temperatures and a
slight summer breeze. Approaching the lighthouse, we saw sailboats cruising past
and performed the mandatory picture taking duties.
Since my wife and I are lighthouse aficionados, it was necessary for me
to call her at work and flaunt my current global position.
Returning to the Holiday Inn,
they were now able to cope with us, so we checked into our room, put on the
racing duds and departed for Fremont Speedway.
